COVID-19: 197 new cases recorded, daily count rises to 323

VOV.VN - Vietnam has confirmed 197 new coronavirus cases in 12 cities and provinces during the past six hours, raising its 24-hour caseload to 323, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in its 06.00pm COVID-19 update on June 27.

Besides nine imported cases detected in Kien Giang, Tay Ninh and Khanh Hoa, the remaining 188 locally acquired cases were documented in Ho Chi Minh City (95), Binh Duong (36), Bac Giang (15), Quang Ngai (15), Phu Yen (8 ), Hung Yen (7), Bac Ninh (6), Nghe An (4), and Da Nang (2).

Most of the local infections were recorded in quarantine or lockdown areas.

Ho Chi Minh City, the busiest and most populous city in Vietnam, remains the epicentre of the fresh outbreak in the southern region. The second largest coronavirus hotspot has registered nearly 3,300 cases since late April 2021.

It has been carrying out an extensive vaccination campaign, the largest of its kind in the city, using more than 800,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine the Japanese Government has recently donated to Vietnam.

So far more than 700,000 doses have been administered, and the city aims to complete the campaign in one or two days’ time.

Elsewhere, local authorities of Phu Yen, a south-central coastal province, moved to conduct contact tracing and test suspect cases after confirming 18 more infections in 24 hours, including eight announced in the morning.

The province is implementing social distancing measures to halt the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, another COVID-19 patient died in Ho Chi Minh City on June 27, according to the MoH. The 53-year-old patient tested positive on June 24 and died one day later after being admitted to a local hospital.

This is the second COVID-19 death the MoH has confirmed during the past 24 hours, raising the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 76.

Vietnam has documented 12,304 COVID-19 cases, including 41 deaths, following the resurgence of the virus in late April.

Overall, it has recorded a total of 15,643 cases, including 76 deaths, since the virus attacked the country in January 2020.
