Cold snap hits northern region ahead of Tet

A cold wave which hit the northern region on January 28 has lowered temperatures in the northern and northern central localities down to around 10 degrees Celsius. The cold snap is expected to last for the next 10 days.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, the cold spell is predicted to bring rain and even frost to the northern mountainous area.

The temperature of the northern delta region will hover between 11 and 14 degrees Celsius. Mountainous areas will be eight to 11 degrees Celsius, and in some places even as low as negative five degrees Celsius.

Hanoi is predicted to be cold and have scattered rainfall this week.

The central provinces and cities have also been affected by the cold snap. Rainfall is forecasted from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue provinces.

Hoang Phuc Lam, head of the centre’s long-term weather forecasting division, said that cold spells are forecasted in late January and early February in the north.

In February, the northern region will brace for four to five cold snaps. In the middle of February, coinciding with the Lunar New Year holidays, the cold snap will cause light rain.
