Cold air weakens as temperatures rise, air pollution worsens
VOV.VN - A cold air mass that swept across northern and north-central Vietnam over the past two days, bringing rain and a sharp drop in temperatures, began to weaken on December 15, allowing temperatures to rise by 3-4°C, weather officials said.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the cold spell was not particularly strong, and northeasterly winds in northern Vietnam started to ease on December 15.
Parts of the northern region remains under the influence of a dry cold air mass, with dry weather and sunny conditions around midday. Daytime temperatures in the Red River Delta are forecast to gradually rise to 21–25°C, before dropping to 14–17°C at night, with some mountainous areas falling below 13°C.
In central Vietnam, rainfall was mainly recorded on the morning of December 15 and is expected to taper off later in the day. Temperatures in the region are also forecast to edge up, ranging between 20 and 30°C.
As rainfall subsides and northeasterly winds weaken, air pollution has returned across several northern provinces, forecasters said.
Air quality in Hanoi and Hung Yen has deteriorated to poor levels, while Ninh Binh and Hai Phong recorded unhealthy air quality. Conditions are expected to remain poor to unhealthy on December 16, with Hanoi forecast to reach a very unhealthy air quality level, with an AQI of 201. Ninh Binh, Hung Yen and Thai Nguyen are projected to stay in the unhealthy range, with AQI levels between 152 and 182, while Hai Phong and Phu Tho are forecast to see poor air quality.
The national weather bureau said the northern region would continue to be affected by cold air during the first two days of the week, bringing dry conditions. Overnight temperatures are forecast to drop below 14°C in mountainous areas and to around 17°C in the lowlands, while daytime highs range from 18 to 21°C.
Around December 17–18, an eastward-shifted cold air surge is expected to bring cloudier conditions and light rain to parts of the northern region. From December 19 to 20, the cold air mass is forecast to weaken, with dry weather returning.
Elsewhere, the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam have entered the dry season, with sunny and dry conditions forecast throughout the day, weather officials said.
Midday temperatures in the Central Highlands are expected to stay relatively mild, at below 28°C. In southern Vietnam, hotter conditions are anticipated, with daytime highs of 32–33°C. In some urban areas, including Bien Hoa ward (Dong Nai) and Ben Thanh ward (Ho Chi Minh City), temperatures are set to peak at around 34°C at midday.
