Cold air mass to hit Northern Vietnam on New Year’s Day
VOV.VN - A new and relatively strong cold air mass is expected to move into Northern Vietnam around January 1, 2026, bringing rain and a sharp drop in temperatures, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
From the early hours of January 1, northern localities will experience rain and scattered light showers as temperatures fall rapidly. Cold conditions will prevail, with severe cold possible in mountainous areas.
Minimum temperatures across the North are forecast at 14–17°C, dropping to below 13°C in highland areas, and in some places below 11°C. Daytime highs will range from 18–22°C.
From January 2 to 4, cold weather is anticipated to persist in Northern Vietnam, with occasional rain. The cold spell is forecast to last through the first week of the new year, potentially affecting travel and outdoor activities during the holiday period.
Prior to the arrival of this cold air mass, from now until December 31, Northern Vietnam will be influenced by a weakening cold air system shifting eastward. Weather conditions are set to be cloudy with fog in the morning and some sunshine in the afternoon.
Daytime temperatures will rise slightly to 23–26°C, while nighttime lows will range from 17–20°C. In high-altitude areas above 1,500m such as Sa Pa, temperatures will fluctuate between 9 and 17°C.
In North-central and Central Vietnam, from the night of January 1, cold air interacting with northeastern winds and the Truong Son Mountain Range is expected to bring prolonged rain and thunderstorms through January 3. Localities from Thanh Hoa to Hue will see cooler conditions, with daytime highs of 20–23°C and nighttime lows of 17–20°C.
Cities and provinces from Da Nang to Quang Ngai will experience scattered rain, with temperatures ranging from 20–22°C at night to 23–27°C during the day. Meanwhile, the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam will probably see little rainfall through the end of 2025 and the first days of 2026. Nighttime temperatures in the Central Highlands will generally fall below 20°C, while daytime temperatures stay under 30°C.
In Southern Vietnam, minimum temperatures will remain below 25°C, with daytime highs under 34°C. On New Year’s Day 2026, temperatures are forecast at 21–32°C in Ho Chi Minh City, 19–30°C in Can Tho, and 24–30°C on Phu Quoc Island.
