Burial ceremony held in Dien Bien for fallen soldiers repatriated from Laos

VOV.VN - Authorities in northern Dien Bien province on May 27 held a solemn memorial and burial ceremony for nine sets of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who sacrificed their lives during international missions in Laos.

The ceremony took place at Tong Khao Martyrs Cemetery in Thanh Nua commune and was attended by Politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra, along with leaders of Military Region 2, Dien Bien province, soldiers, and local residents.

In a solemn atmosphere, delegates offered flowers and incense and observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for Vietnam’s revolutionary cause and international missions in Laos.

The nine sets of remains were recovered by the Military Region 2 martyrs’ remains recovery team during the second phase of the 2025–2026 dry-season search operation in Oudomxay province, Laos. Among them, eight sets of remains have not yet been identified, while one was confirmed to belong to martyr Nguyen Thanh Nhien.

The memorial and burial ceremony was held as Vietnam is implementing the nationwide “500-Day Campaign” aimed at accelerating the search, recovery, and identification of fallen soldiers’ remains ahead of the 80th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day on July 27, 2027.

The event not only reflected Vietnam’s deep gratitude toward those who sacrificed their lives for the nation, but also reaffirmed the special solidarity between Vietnam and Laos.

Following the ceremony, eight sets of remains were laid to rest at Tong Khao Martyrs Cemetery with full military honours and the respect of local authorities, soldiers, and residents.

The remains of martyr Nguyen Thanh Nhien were returned to his hometown in Hung Yen province for burial.
