At least 4 killed and 78 injured as Yagi pounds northern Vietnam
VOV.VN - Typhoon Yagi, with winds gusting more than 100kph when it slammed into northern Vietnam on September 7, has left at least four dead and 78 injured, according to the Department for Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control.
Quang Ninh province, which was along the path of Yagi’s eye, recorded three deaths, while its neighbour Hai Duong reported a death.
Fifty-eight people were injured in Quang Ninh, and 20 others in Hai Phong city, another locality along the path of Yagi’s eye.
Notably, Yagi, with winds of 149 kmh, sank a crane ship and a tugboat in Quang Ninh, leaving one dead and 13 missing on.
Thousands of houses lost their roofs, while thousands of trees, electric poles, and signposts were toppled.
After making landfall, Yagi lost its force due to friction with rugged terrain. At 7p.m. the typhoon was sweeping across Hai Duong province, packing winds of 89-117kmh.
In the coming three hours, Yagi is moving west at a speed of 15kph and weakening further.
Though Yagi is losing its strength into a low depression and then dissipating on September 8 morning, it will cause a spell of heavy rain in the coming days.
Meteorologists say heavy rainfall will peak in the Northeast region on September 7 evening into September 8 morning, with widespread rainfall ranging from 80 to 200 mm, and even exceeding 400 mm.
There is a high risk of flash floods, landslides in mountainous areas, and flooding in low-lying areas in the northern region.
