An Giang, Cambodia boost cooperation in search for Vietnamese soldiers’ remains

The Mekong Delta province of An Giang and Cambodia’s Koh Kong, Preah Sihanouk, Kampong Speu, Takeo, Kampot and Kep provinces will intensify collaboration in the search and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who laid down their lives during war time in the neighbouring country.

This is part of the agreements signed between the Vietnamese province and Cambodian localities as part of the working trip to Cambodia from October 6-10 by Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Le Trung Ho.

At the signing ceremonies, Ho expressed his gratitude towards the valuable support of the Cambodian local governments, armed forces and people, stating their assistance, ranging from providing information as well as guiding and protecting An Giang’s search teams, has been vital to locating and repatriating the remains of the soldiers shedding their blood for the noble international mission.

Since the agreement on the repatriation work was signed between two Governments on August 28, 2000 in Phnom Penh, the teams have recovered 4,286 sets of remains across six Cambodian provinces, including 160 in Koh Kong, 205 in Preah Sihanouk, 1,307 in Kampong Speu, 834 in Takeo, 1,701 in Kampot, and 79 in Kep.

Representatives from the Cambodian side pledged continued support and cooperation in the work while expressing heartfelt thanks to the Vietnamese Party, Government, armed forces, and people for helping Cambodia overthrow the Pol Pot genocidal regime, achieve national liberation, and rebuild the country.

Cambodia will implement the signed documents in the spirit of solidarity, cooperation, and mutual respect, consolidating the friendship with Vietnam in any circumstances.
