2.6 magnitude earthquake jolts Hanoi capital in the evening
VOV.VN - An earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale hit Chuong My district on the outskirts of Hanoi capital on February 3 evening, confirmed the Institute of Geophysics.
According to the Institute of Geophysics, the earthquake occurred at 7.52P.M. at a focal depth of approximately 8 km.
As it was a small earthquake, it did not cause any disaster risk, said the Institute.
Due to the earthquake, residents in several areas of Chuong My and My Duc Đức districts clearly felt the tremors.
Minh Duc, a local resident of My Duc district, said he experienced shaking for 3-5 seconds and suspected an earthquake. On social media, many others also posted about feeling the tremors.
Authorities are currently monitoring and assessing the situation to provide an official conclusion regarding the tremor.
Previously, on March 25, 2024, Hanoi recorded a 4.0-magnitude earthquake in My Duc district, causing tremors in the capital. Many residents living in high-rise buildings and office towers clearly felt the shaking.
Hanoi and its surrounding areas are located within the Red River - Chay River fault zone, which is currently in a quiet phase with a low risk of earthquakes. However, according to data from the Institute of Geophysics, this fault zone has experienced earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.1 and 5.5 in the past.
The recurrence cycle for a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in Hanoi is estimated to be 1,100 years, with the last major earthquake occurring in 1285.
