11 foreign bikers fined for expressway violation in northern Vietnam

VOV.VN - Vietnamese traffic police have fined 11 foreign motorcyclists for illegally riding large-displacement motorcycles on the Tuyen Quang–Phu Tho expressway, the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security said on February 8.

The case came to light after a video circulated on social media showing a group of around 10 high-powered motorcycles travelling at high speed, frequently changing lanes and weaving between cars on the expressway.

Following instructions from the leader of the Traffic Police Department, authorities launched an investigation. Initial findings showed the convoy consisted of 11 motorcycles ridden by 11 men, with three bikes carrying passengers, travelling from Phu Tho province toward Tuyen Quang province.

On February 8, traffic police from Phu Tho coordinated with counterparts in Tuyen Quang to inspect the vehicles in Minh Xuan ward, Tuyen Quang province, and summoned the group for questioning.

Police identified the group as 11 men and three women, with the motorcycles operated by 11 foreign nationals holding citizenship from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman.

Authorities confirmed that all riders possessed valid driving licences, legal entry visas and complete vehicle documentation. However, motorcycles are prohibited from using expressways in Vietnam.

Traffic police issued administrative violation records against all 11 riders for operating motorcycles on an expressway, with each fined VND5 million (approximately US$200).

Vietnamese traffic police urged road users, especially foreign drivers, to familiarise themselves with local traffic laws and strictly comply with expressway restrictions to ensure road safety.
