Hanoi’s AI traffic camera system detects over 6,300 violations in a month
VOV.VN - Hanoi’s AI-powered traffic camera system has detected 6,351 traffic violations eligible for automated penalties after one month of operation, the city’s Traffic Police Department said on January 13.
Between December 13, 2025 and January 12, 2026, the system recorded violations across multiple major roads in the capital, with 4,215 cars and motorcycles running red lights, accounting for 66.36% of the total. Failure to wear helmets made up 2,053 cases, or 32.32%, alongside other violations such as illegal parking and not wearing seat belts.
Authorities said the integration of AI cameras with intelligent traffic signal control has significantly improved traffic flow. On one-way roads, average travel time fell by 31% to 36.8%, while traffic throughput at intersections increased by up to 18.88%.
On busy two-way roads with complex intersections, average travel time decreased by 20% to 25%, with vehicle throughput rising by 8% to 15%.
According to the Hanoi Traffic Police Department, the camera system is designed to support law-enforcement forces in building a disciplined, safe and civilized urban environment, with residents positioned as both beneficiaries and active participants in traffic monitoring and compliance.
Authorities said that the deployment of AI surveillance is aimed primarily at prevention rather than increasing fines, helping raise public awareness, improve compliance with traffic laws and reduce congestion.
Operating around the clock and unaffected by weather or visibility conditions, the AI-enabled cameras help shift behaviour from reactive compliance to self-discipline — a key factor in fostering traffic culture and urban civility, police said.
Recorded images captured by the system serve as objective evidence, reducing disputes during enforcement and increasing transparency in the handling of violations, thereby strengthening public trust.
As Hanoi prepares for the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, police said the AI camera system will continue to operate at full capacity, in coordination with other law-enforcement measures and public communication efforts, to ensure security, safety and smooth travel for residents.
In the coming months, local authorities plan to expand the use of automated enforcement to violations related to urban order and environmental sanitation, including illegal use of sidewalks and roadways, unauthorized street vending, littering and improper wastewater discharge. Depending on the nature and severity of violations, recorded images will be transferred to relevant agencies for verification and handling in accordance with the law.
