Venezuela, Vietnam mark 36 years of diplomatic ties

VOV.VN - The 36th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Venezuela offers an opportunity for the people of both countries to look back with pride on a rare journey of solidarity in opposite hemispheres, bound together by shared ideals of independence, freedom and aspirations for development.

The 36th anniversary of Vietnam-Venezuela diplomatic relations (December 18, 1989 - December 18, 2025) was celebrated on December 17 at the monument of President Ho Chi Minh in central Caracas by Venezuela’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly, in coordination with the Vietnamese Embassy.

In his address, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly and President of the Venezuela-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group Saúl Ortega reviewed the development of bilateral ties, stressing that the relationship stems from profound similarities in the two nations’ histories of national liberation struggles, their common aspirations for peace, freedom and justice, and has been inspired and nurtured by the thoughts of two great leaders- Liberator Simón Bolívar and President Ho Chi Minh.

Sharing his deep affection and admiration for President Ho Chi Minh and the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people, Ortega said such sentiments have stayed with him since his student years, when he participated in international solidarity movements supporting Vietnam’s cause of national liberation and reunification.

Recalling his visit to Vietnam in September 2025 as part of a high-level Venezuelan delegation attending activities marking the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day, Ortega said he was particularly impressed by the remarkable achievements of the Doi Moi renewal process initiated and led by the Communist Party of Vietnam, which he described (CPV) as vivid evidence of an independent and self-reliant development path pursued for the happiness of the people.

Speaking at the ceremony, Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister Tatiana Pugh affirmed that over more than three decades, despite complex and unpredictable regional and international developments, solidarity, friendship and cooperation between Venezuela and Vietnam have not faded but have continued to be strengthened and deepened, serving as a reliable foundation for the interests of the two nations and for peace, stability, cooperation and development in their respective regions and worldwide.

Emphasizing that the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), the State, Government and people of Venezuela attach great importance to relations with Vietnam, Pugh expressed admiration for the Vietnamese people’s resilient and steadfast spirit during their past struggle for independence, as well as for the country’s notable achievements in national construction and development under the CPV leadership.

She conveyed Venezuela’s desire to further promote relations between the two parties, states and people in a closer, more substantive and effective manner.

Sharing her special affection for Vietnam, Pugh said she was honored to serve as Venezuela’s Ambassador to Vietnam from 2020 to 2023 and has closely followed every step of Vietnam’s development.

On the occasion of the upcoming 14th National Congress of the CPV, she extended her best wishes to the Party, State and people of Vietnam, expressing confidence that the Congress would be successful and continue to guide Vietnam toward a prosperous, strong, civilized and happy future in a new era.

For his part, Vietnamese Ambassador to Venezuela Vu Trung My expressed sincere appreciation for the warm, enduring sentiments shown by Venezuelan leaders and people, as well as by Venezuela’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee, toward Vietnam. He reaffirmed that Vietnam’s Party and State remain steadfast in valuing and preserving the precious legacy of friendship painstakingly cultivated by late President Hugo Chávez and successive generations of leaders from both countries.

Ambassador Vu Trung My underscored that the 36th anniversary of diplomatic relations provides an occasion for the people from both countries to proudly reflect on their unique journey of companionship across hemispheres, united by ideals of independence, freedom and development aspirations, while continuing to write new chapters worthy of the spiritual legacy left by earlier generations.

According to the ambassador, building on the foundation of traditional friendship and comprehensive partnership, together with the strong political will of the ruling parties, governments and the aspirations of both peoples, Vietnam-Venezuela relations are poised to generate new momentum and breakthroughs, making positive contributions to the development of each country and to peace, stability and cooperation in the region and the world.
