President meets US counterpart in RoK, urges swift completion of reciprocal trade deal

VOV.VN - President Luong Cuong has met with his US counterpart Donald Trump on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in the Republic of Korea (RoK), urging both sides to swiftly finalize negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement.

President Luong Cuong on October 29 met with US President Donald Trump and senior leaders of several other APEC member economies during a special welcome dinner hosted by RoK President Lee Jae Myung.

The two leaders appreciated the positive results of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the US in recent times and agreed to continue close coordination to further develop bilateral relations in a deeper, more substantive, stable, and sustainable manner, in line with the interests of the peoples of both countries, and to make positive contributions to peace, cooperation, and sustainable development in the region and the world.

President Luong Cuong congratulated the US on its recent achievements under the leadership of President Donald Trump, and praised the President’s role in promoting conflict resolution and restoring peace in several regions around the world. He affirmed that Vietnam is ready to act as a bridge to seek sustainable solutions in line with international law for these conflicts.

With a view to maintaining stable and effective development, the Vietnamese State leader proposed that the two sides promptly complete negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement that is mutually beneficial, based on the recently issued joint statement, taking into account Vietnam’s specific conditions and the importance of bilateral ties. He also encouraged stronger cooperation in politics-diplomacy, economics-trade, science and technology, defence-security, and people-to-people exchanges, as well as in addressing the consequences of war. Vietnam welcomed the US’ active and responsible contributions to the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, he added.

For his part, President Donald Trump affirmed the US’ recognition of great importance to its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam, praising Vietnam’s growing role and standing, as well as its efforts in reform, opening up, integration, and economic innovation.

Trump welcomed Vietnam’s imports of US key products. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of shared concern. The top US leader reaffirmed support for ASEAN’s centrality and hailed Vietnam’s contributions to regional and global affairs.

On the occasion, President Luong Cuong extended an invitation on behalf of Vietnam’s senior leaders for President Trump and his wife to visit Vietnam at an early date. President Trump expressed his positive impressions from his visits to Vietnam in 2017 and 2019, thanked the senior Vietnamese leaders for the invitation, and promised to arrange a visit to Vietnam.

Also at the welcome dinner, Cuong also held brief meetings with the prime ministers of Canada, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. During the exchanges, the leaders expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s comprehensive development in recent years as well as its growing international role.

President Luong Cuong and the leaders reaffirmed the importance of promoting substantive and comprehensive bilateral relations in the coming period, as well as of enhancing close coordination and actively participating in cooperative processes within multilateral mechanisms and forums, including APEC and ASEAN, thereby contributing to stability, peace, cooperation, and development in the region and globally.
