Party General Secretary To Lam begin official visit to Malaysia
VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee To Lam, his spouse and a high-ranking delegation of Vietnam arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, beginning an official visit to Malaysia from November 21-23, at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his spouse.
Both sides established diplomatic ties on March 30, 1973. The bilateral relationship continues to develop well on the basis of the Strategic Partnership established in August, 2015. The two sides regularly exchange delegations, hold high-level contacts at all channels and levels, and effectively implement bilateral co-operation mechanisms.
Economic and trade relations between the two have seen positive developments, with Malaysia being Vietnam's second largest trade and investment partner in ASEAN.
The Vietnamese side represents Malaysia's third largest trading partner in the bloc, with last year’s two-way trade reaching US$12.7 billion.
Co-operation in other areas such as defence - security, labour, education, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges have all achieved many positive results. In addition, the two countries have closely co-ordinated efforts at ASEAN and multilateral forums, sharing strategic views and interests on most regional and international issues.
Welcoming General Secretary To Lam and his wife along with the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation at the airport were many high-ranking officials of the two countries, along with Vietnamese Ambassador to Malaysia Dinh Ngoc Linh and Vietnamese community representatives in Malaysia.

There are currently more than 1,000 Vietnamese students studying in Malaysia in the fields of IT, biotechnology, linguistics, and psychology. Each year sees Malaysia provide scholarships to Vietnamese officials under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Program (MTCP).
There are currently about 40,000 Vietnamese people living, working, or married to settle in Malaysia. In addition, the two nations signed a government-level tourism co-operation agreement in 1994 and the two countries are always among the top tourist sending markets of each other.
The official visit to Malaysia by Party General Secretary To Lam, his spouse, and the high-ranking delegation is of great significance in terms of implementing the foreign policy adopted at the 13th National Party Congress and the Party and State's documents on foreign affairs.
The visit is viewed as an important milestone in the joint relationship, contributing to consolidating the foundation of political trust between the two countries, demonstrating the Vietnamese Party and State’s unwavering policy of always attaching importance to and wishing to further strengthen relations with neighbouring and regional countries, including Malaysia.
Vietnam is keen to work alongside Malaysia to bring the relationship of trust and effective co-operation between the two countries to a new stage at a higher and more practical level, thereby meeting the development requirements of the two countries in the new period. This is along with actively and responsibly joining Malaysia and ASEAN member states in building a united and strong regional community.
