NA Chairman’s Morocco visit to add fresh impetus to bilateral cooperation

VOV.VN - Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Tran Thanh Man’s official visit to Morocco is expected to provide strong impetus for boosting bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, agriculture, and tourism, with the goal of raising bilateral trade to US$500 million in the coming years.

Chairman Tran Thanh Man, accompanied by his spouse and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation will pay an official visit to Morocco from July 24 to 27 (local time) at the invitation of Rachid Talbi Alami, President of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco.

Nearly 65 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, ties between Vietnam and Morocco have continued to grow across all three diplomatic channels: Party-to-Party, state-to-state, and people-to-people. Parliamentary cooperation has also seen positive development, both bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks.

Morocco is currently Vietnam’s second-largest trading partner in North Africa, with bilateral trade increasing steadily each year. In 2024, two-way trade surpassed US$302 million, up 28.5% from 2023. Of this, Vietnam exported nearly US$276 million worth of goods, primarily phones and phone components, pepper, and coffee. Meanwhile, Morocco exported over US$26 million to Vietnam, mainly computers and electronic components, fertilizers, leather, and footwear.

The two countries regularly coordinate their positions and support each other at international forums. Morocco backed Vietnam’s bids for non-permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council for the 2020–2021 term, membership on the Human Rights Council for the 2023–2025 term, the Economic and Social Council, the Executive Board of UNESCO for 2021–2025, the International Law Commission, and the Council of Administration of the Universal Postal Union.

Both sides have also worked to advance cooperation in education and training, cultural and tourism exchange, and locality-to-locality cooperation.

Parliamentary cooperation between the two countries has also been strengthened. The National Assembly of Vietnam and the House of Representatives of Morocco signed a cooperation agreement that serves as the basis for implementing joint activities, on the occasion of the official visit to Vietnam by Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives Habib El Malki in December 2017.

Both sides maintain regular exchanges and high-level contacts. The 15th National Assembly of Vietnam has established the Vietnam–Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group, comprising eight members. The Moroccan House of Representatives has likewise formed an eight member Morocco–Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group.

The two legislatures also maintain contacts and hold consultations at multilateral parliamentary forums. Within the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), both sides regularly send delegations to conferences hosted by each country, thus affirming mutual support.

With the active support of the Vietnamese National Assembly, which held the AIPA Chairmanship in 2020, the Moroccan Parliament was officially admitted as an observer to the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) during its 41st General Assembly in September 2020.

Within the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie (APF), the Vietnam and Morocco subcommittees maintain close cooperation and make active contributions to APF activities.

In January 2025, the Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, who also serves as a Vice President of the APF, attended the APF Executive Committee meeting and the Francophone Parliamentary Forum on sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate change response, held in Can Tho City.

The official visit to Morocco by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man is set to offer an opportunity for Vietnam to diversify its international partnerships and broaden cooperation across multiple areas, including parliamentary affairs. It also seeks to mobilize international resources in support of national development goals and enhance Vietnam’s image and standing alongside its legislature in the international arena.
