NA Chairman’s visit highlights economic cooperation potential with Morocco

VOV.VN - Regular exchanges between senior leaders serve as the strongest assurance for Vietnamese and Moroccan businesses to confidently expand operations and enhance cooperation, Ambassador Jamale Chouaibi affirmed in a recent interview with a Voice of Vietnam (VOV) reporter regarding the significance of the visit to Morocco by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man.

Reporter: What is your assessment of the significance and expectations for the upcoming visit to Morocco by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man?

Ambassador Jamale Chouaibi: The visit by Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to Morocco is a clear demonstration of the sincere political will shared by both sides to strengthen, and expand their partnership. It also reflects the deep mutual respect between our two countries.
As we all know, for any partnership to grow strong, both parties must share common foundations and values. We take pride in the many similarities between Morocco and Vietnam.
First of all, both countries adhere to the principle of promoting peace and resolving conflicts through peaceful means. Both have also made considerable contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

In addition, both countries hold strategic advantages in terms of geopolitical location. Morocco sees Vietnam as a gateway to Southeast Asia, given its key role within ASEAN. Conversely, for Vietnam, Morocco can serve as a bridge to Africa and Europe. These commonalities provide momentum for developing a more substantive and effective bilateral relationship.

Reporter: Among the pillars of cooperation between the two countries, parliamentary diplomacy has always been a priority. How do you assess the role of the two legislative bodies in promoting and devising concrete areas of cooperation between Vietnam and Morocco?

Ambassador Jamale Chouaibi: Each high-level visit between the two countries sends a clear political message about the leadership’s determination to bolster cooperation. We are also pleased that Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man will lead a multi-sector economic delegation to attend an economic forum in Morocco.

Vietnam and Morocco are geographically distant, which still causes hesitation among some businesses. However, when they witness regular exchanges at the highest level, they will feel more assured about expanding operations and increasing investment. As I mentioned earlier, the fact that both countries share the same orientation and have many similarities will serve as a lever for fostering more substantive and effective cooperation.
This will also help businesses identify new key areas for cooperation and the formation of joint ventures.

It can be said that regular exchanges between national leaders act as a driving force, drawing in the participation of many economic partners. These leaders have sent very clear signals to the business community.

With the exception of the COVID-19 period, high-level contacts between the two parliaments have been maintained regularly, through numerous meetings on the sidelines of AIPA sessions, and now with the upcoming visit to Morocco by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man.
Parliamentary diplomacy has truly become one of the key pillars guiding Morocco–Vietnam relations.

Reporter: As you just mentioned, during recent high-level meetings such as the one between Moroccan House Speaker Rachid Talbi El Alami and Vietnamese NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man in January this year, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to boosting more substantive and effective cooperation. What can we expect for bilateral relations in the time ahead?

Ambassador Jamale Chouaibi: That meeting was a valuable opportunity for both sides to reaffirm that Morocco–Vietnam relations should not be limited to trade exchanges alone. Both countries are currently implementing ambitious development programs in areas such as digital transformation, renewable energy, circular economy, and industrial acceleration. We are fully capable of developing joint ventures, industrial cooperation, technology transfer, and the sharing of practical experience.

Another key area of cooperation is logistics. The two countries are currently discussing the possibility of twinning ports such as Ho Chi Minh City Port with Tangier-MED or Casablanca, and Hai Phong with Agadir. Once direct maritime routes are established, the flow of goods between the two countries will become much smoother.

In addition, there is the field of finance. We hope that the visit to Morocco by NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man and the multi-sector delegation will provide an opportunity for both sides to further discuss cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City’s financial center and Casablanca Finance City, the largest financial hub in Africa.

It is important to emphasize that Morocco and Vietnam are two complementary economies. Morocco has strengths in renewable energy, the automotive industry, and fisheries, while Vietnam holds major advantages in processing industries, electronics, and agriculture. This forms a solid foundation for long-term cooperation.

If we move beyond trade and expand into industrial cooperation and joint ventures in areas such as fertilizers and green energy, where both countries already have accumulated experience, then Morocco–Vietnam cooperation will certainly open up a new horizon.

Reporter: Thank you very much.
