Luong Cuong elected as President of Vietnam
VOV.VN - The 15th National Assembly elected Luong Cuong as the new President of Vietnam for the 2021-26 term at its eight session held on October 21 in Hanoi.
A total of 440 NA deputies voted to pass the NA’s resolution on electing Luong Cuong to the post.
The resolution received support from all 440 deputies ((100 per cent of those present) at the meeting, equivalent to 91.67% of the total number of NA deputies.
During the swearing-in ceremony that took place shortly after the NA's vote, the newly-elected President pledged full allegiance to the Fatherland, to the people, and to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and vowed to make efforts to fulfill the tasks entrusted to him by the Party, the State and the people.
In his speech on taking office, Cuong expressed his profound gratitude to the Party, State, Army, Party committees and authorities at all levels, incumbent and former leaders, comrades and people for their guidance, support, care and encouragement, which have helped him to fulfil his duties and grow into the leader as he is today.
He pledged to pursue a consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, diversification and multilateralism of external ties, active and proactive global integration, and ensuring the highest national interests.
The new State leader called for the collective strength and support of the Party Central Committee, the Politburo, the Secretariat, the Party General Secretary, incumbent and former leaders of the Party and State, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, sectors, localities and all citizens, both at home and abroad, to help him fulfil the assigned tasks
Cuong, born in 1957 in Viet Tri City, the northern province of Phu Tho holds a bachelor degree in Party building and State governance.
He enrolled in the military in 1975, before becoming Vice Director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army in 2011 and Director of the General Department of Politics in 2016.
He is currently member of the 13th-tenure Politburo, Secretary of the 12th and 13th-tenure Central Party Committee (since May 2024), member of the 11th, 12th, and 13th-tenure Central Party Committee, State President, and standing member of the Party Secretariat.
