VOV.VN - Party General Secretary To Lam and Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei have agreed to strengthen their comprehensive partnership by expanding cooperation in trade, defense, fisheries, energy, education, Halal industry, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
Party General Secretary To Lam hosted a reception in Hanoi on November 30 for Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei during his state visit to Vietnam.
General Secretary To Lam warmly welcomed the Sultan’s return to Vietnam for the seventh time, expressing confidence that this visit will further enhance the Comprehensive Partnership between Vietnam and Brunei in a more substantive and effective manner.
He applauded Brunei’s tremendous achievements in national development, particularly strong economic growth, ensured social welfare, and a human development index ranked in the “very high” group globally, and wished Brunei success in realizing its national development vision toward 2035.
Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah expressed his pleasure at returning to Vietnam since 2019 and his desire to further strengthen the Comprehensive Partnership between Brunei and Vietnam. The Sultan also extended his deep condolences to families of victims and his sympathy to people in areas affected by floods and landslides.
The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the strong development of the Vietnam–Brunei Comprehensive Partnership over recent years; high-level and regular contacts have been maintained. Bilateral trade in 2024 rose 165% compared with 2023, achieving ahead of schedule the target of US$500 million set for 2025. Cooperation in defense and security, fisheries, oil and gas, and education has yielded positive results.
Regarding future cooperation, the leaders agreed to strengthen political trust; promote and facilitate trade and investment activities; enhance connectivity and support enterprises in information exchange and partner search; and effectively tap cooperation potential in areas such as agriculture, fisheries, Halal, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Vietnamese Party chief emphasized the need to bolster maritime cooperation, including combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and responding to climate change.
In response, the Sultan highlighted Vietnam as an important trade partner and expressed a desire to boost cooperation in agriculture, Halal industries, and encourage Vietnamese enterprises to expand cooperation in the oil and gas sector, as well as to enhance people-to-people exchanges through scholarship and training programs.
Both sides pledged to continue coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums, particularly ASEAN and the United Nations; to reinforce solidarity, unity, and maintain ASEAN’s centrality in the region; and to step up cooperation on regional and international issues of shared concern, including the East Sea.
On this occasion, the Sultan of Brunei cordially invited Party General Secretary To Lam to visit Brunei at a convenient time. The Party leader thanked him and accepted the invitation with pleasure.
