Vietnam, Brunei look to closer cooperation during Sultan’s State visit
VOV.VN - Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Haji Hassanal Bolkiah is making a state visit to Vietnam from November 30 to December 2 at the invitation of President Luong Cuong.
The visit takes place at a time when ties between the two countries have continued to see positive development.
Both nations’ senior leaders have maintained frequent meetings and exchanges at regional and international forums. Most recently, President Luong Cuong met with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in the Republic of Korea in late October.
This is the sixth visit to Vietnam by the Brunei Sultan. During his most recent visit in 2019, the two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership.
According to Vietnamese ambassador to Brunei Tran Anh Vu, during the current visit the two sides will exchange views and review the implementation of cooperation areas under the Action Program for the Comprehensive Partnership for the 2023-2027 period.
They will also discuss measures to strengthen and deepen cooperation in key and priority fields, including political and diplomatic affairs, defence and security, energy, the halal sector, tourism and people-to-people exchanges, as well as in other areas of mutual interest and with potential for closer cooperation.
Economic cooperation between Vietnam and Brunei has recorded notable progress in recent years. Two-way trade during the 2023-2025 period surpassed the US$500 million target, with bilateral trade reaching more than US$670 million in 2024.
In addition, during the ten-month period of 2025, Vietnam’s exports to Brunei increased by over 30% compared with the same period last year.
Several Vietnamese businesses in Brunei are expanding their operations, particularly in food services and handicrafts. The two sides are also actively exchanging and working to establish cooperation frameworks in fields of shared interest, especially the halal industry and fisheries. Brunei currently ranks 28th among countries and territories investing in Vietnam, with 153 valid projects.
Alongside the positive results in economic, trade and investment cooperation, Vietnam and Brunei are continuing to enhance cooperation in defence and security, energy, education, culture and people-to-people exchanges.
The two countries also coordinate closely at regional and international forums, especially at the United Nations, ASEAN and APEC.
