Vietnamese leaders attend groundbreaking, inauguration ceremonies for key projects
VOV.VN - Many Vietnamese leaders fanned out across the country on December 19 to attend groundbreaking and inauguration ceremonies for major infrastructure and urban development projects, marking national celebrations ahead of the 11th National Patriotic Emulation Congress and the 14th National Party Congress.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the groundbreaking of the National Olympic Sports Urban Complex in Thuong Phuc commune, Hanoi, a mega development covering more than 9,100 hectares with a total investment of around VND925 trillion (US$35 billion), making it the largest urban project ever launched in Vietnam.
At the centre of the complex is the Bronze Drum Stadium, a national-level venue built on 73 hectares with a planned capacity of 135,000 seats. Designed to meet FIFA standards, the stadium will feature a retractable roof, smart seating with 5G connectivity, real-time crowd and security management systems and advanced environmental technologies aimed at reducing energy and water consumption. Construction is scheduled for completion in August 2028.
National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man attended the launch of the Red River Landscape Boulevard project in Hanoi, a public-private partnership with a preliminary investment of about VND855 trillion (US$32.5 billion). The project stretches across roughly 11,000 hectares, running from Hong Ha Bridge to Me So Bridge and spanning 19 wards and communes.
The plan includes an 80-kilometre traffic boulevard, large-scale riverside parks and entertainment areas, land reserves for urban redevelopment, and a 42-kilometre underground metro line along the river’s right bank designed to integrate with Hanoi’s urban rail network. Authorities said the project is expected to be completed in 2030, coinciding with the centenary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
In the Mekong Delta, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha attended the inauguration of the Can Tho–Hau Giang section of the eastern North–South expressway and the technical opening of the Hau Giang–Ca Mau section.
The Can Tho–Ca Mau expressway spans nearly 137 kilometres including connecting routes, with a total investment of more than VND27.5 trillion (US$1.05 billion), and is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity and logistics.
Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long presided over the inauguration of Bach Mai Hospital 2 and Viet Duc Hospital 2 in Ninh Binh province. Bach Mai’s new facility is being developed as a “smart hospital”, with integrated digital management systems and 325 inpatient beds in its first operational phase. Meanwhile, Viet Duc Hospital’s second campus, built to European standards, is expected to help ease long-standing overcrowding at its main facility in Hanoi.
In northern Lao Cai province, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a station under the Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong railway project. The rail corridor is expected to strengthen economic links between northern Vietnam, border regions and major seaports, while supporting national security and climate resilience goals.
The same day, Deputy Prime Ministers Nguyen Hoa Binh, Nguyen Chi Dung, Mai Van Chinh, Pham Thi Thanh Tra and Ho Quoc Dung attended groundbreaking and inauguration ceremonies for other key infrastructure projects, including the expansion of Noi Bai International Airport’s Terminal T2, the inauguration of key facilities and the first commercial flight at Long Thanh International Airport, a social housing complex, in other localities nationwide.
