Vietnam sticks to open foreign policy, says newly elected Party chief
VOV.VN - Vietnam will continue to champion its open foreign policy goals adopted by the recent 13th National Party Congress, which has so far proven effective and has been highly appreciated by the international community, said newly elected Party General Secretary To Lam.
Speaking at an international press conference held following his election as Party chief, To Lam, who is also President of Vietnam, stressed the need to maintain the stance of independence and self-reliance in Vietnam’s foreign policy, with national interest being put first and foremost.
“Vietnam befriends all countries in the world, no matter how big or small and no matter how far or near they are… towards mutual understanding and trust and for shared interests,” said To Lam.
“We have introduced a very successful foreign policy, demonstrating our responsibility towards world politics and human civilization by engaging in world peace and in resolving conflicts, through peace advocacy,” he added.
Talking about the country’s next priority, the State leader said Vietnam will continue to promote relations with neighbouring states, strategic and comprehensive partners, and traditional friends, with the primary focus on constantly strengthening political trust, strategic interests, peaceful foreign affairs, and co-operation for the purpose of national development.
Furthermore, he said Vietnam will continue to make practical contributions to maintaining peace and stability in the region and around the world, while elevating multilateral diplomacy and promoting its role as a responsible country of the international community.
To Lam also emphasised the promotion of modern diplomacy by closely combining Party diplomacy, State diplomacy, and people-to-people diplomacy, in which Party diplomacy plays a guiding role.
To Lam succeeded Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong, who passed away in Hanoi on July 19 due to old age and serious illness.
