PM rushes to Yagi-hit Quang Ninh to direct cleanup efforts

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 8 made a field trip to northern Quang Ninh province that was hard hit by typhoon Yagi, to assess the damage and direct measures to address the aftermath.

He was accompanied by leaders of several ministries in charge of agriculture and rural development, industry and trade, education and training, transport, as well as representatives of relevant agencies.

Yagi first battered Quang Ninh on September 7, wreaking havoc across localities of the province.

Preliminary statistics show the typhoon has left four dead and 157 injured. It has torn apart rooftops of nearly 20,000 houses, uprooted 70% of green trees, brought down 1,300 electric poles, submerged or washed away more than 1,000 fishing cages and rafts, and flooded 912 ha of rice.

Many high-rise buildings, government offices, and schools in various localities have been damaged, while nearly all billboards and advertising panels have been toppled. The typhoon has also disrupted the provincial information and communication systems and caused widespread power outages.

Meeting with residents in affected localities, the PM inquired about the damage and encouraged the military, police, youth volunteers, and urban sanitation workers to intensify post-storm cleanup efforts.

At a working session with local leaders, the PM conveyed the condolences and expressions of sympathy from Party General Secretary and President To Lam and other Party and State leaders to the administration, agencies and families of Quang Ninh over the loss of lives and property damage caused by Yagi.

He directed Quang Ninh to mobilize the entire political system to address the aftermath of the typhoon, especially issues related to cleanup and environmental sanitation.

He requested that Electricity of Vietnam Group promptly restore power supply; Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT) and army-run telecoms group (Viettel) restore communication services; and banks explore options for loan extensions, deferments, and debt restructuring to support individuals and businesses.

The PM also asked the transportation sector to urgently repair landslide hit and subsided road sections to ensure smooth traffic flow.

The government leader stressed the need to ensure security, safety, and public welfare; promptly restore production and business activities; secure livelihoods for the people; and promote economic development.

At a meeting in Hanoi earlier the same day, the Prime Minister directed immediate support of approximately VND100 billion each to Quang Ninh and Hai Phong – the two hardest hit localities - to overcome the aftermath of the typhoon.
