PM requests prompt actions to address Yagi consequences

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 8 asked relevant ministries, sectors and localities to take prompt actions to address the consequences of typhoon Yagi that wrought havoc across northern Vietnam.

According to preliminary statistics, Yagi has left 14 dead across northern localities, including four in Hoa Binh, four in Quang Ninh province, two in Hai Phong city, and one each in Hai Duong province, Yen Bai province, Lang Son province and Hanoi capital.

As for property damage, the areas directly hit by Yagi have been left in ruins, and the extent of the damage has yet to be fully assessed.

More than 120,000ha of rice and subsidiary crops have been submerged, mainly in Thai Binh, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh and Ha Noi. More than 1,000 fish and shrimp farming cages have been damaged or washed away, primarily in Quang Ninh.

Hundreds of thousands of households have been left without power due to damage caused by strong winds and heavy rain to the power transmission system.

The PM asked relevant ministries and sectors to review and provide immediate support for Yagi-hit localities and families who have lost loved ones.

Efforts should be made to promptly address the aftermath of the storm, including handling issues related to people’s livelihoods, production, and business, as well as responding to landslides and subsidence, said the PM.

As Yagi has also impacted the power and telecommunications systems, the Government leader directed network service providers to collaborate and share connections.

Yagi, with winds gusting more than 150kph near its centre, pounded northern Vietnam on September 7, submerging parts of the region, knocking down trees, power and telecommunication systems, and tearing apart advertising boards and corrugated roofs.

Yagi is weakening into a low pressure area, but it will continue to bring heavy rain to north-western localities.

Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting emphasized the danger posed by the wide circulation of Yagi, which has encompassed both the northern and north-central regions of Vietnam.

There is a very high risk of flash floods and landslides in the northern mountainous provinces, particularly in Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Yen Bai, Lai Chau, Son La, Hoa Binh, and Thanh Hoa, he warned.

Currently, relevant forces have fanned out to assist residents with a post-storm cleanup campaign.
