VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has called on the military to accelerate development of the national defence industry and master key weapons technologies, stressing innovation, digital transformation and high-quality human resources to support modernisation of the armed forces.
The request was made during a working session on March 12 between the Prime Minister and the Ministry of National Defence on the development of the country’s defence industry.
At the meeting, the Prime Minister underscored the need for the military to effectively implement Party resolutions and directives on building and developing the national defence industry, contributing to enhanced self-reliance and resilience in safeguarding national security.
He urged the armed forces to maintain a strong grasp of the strategic situation, improve forecasting capacity and strengthen strategic advisory work to the Party and State on military and defence matters. At the same time, the military should remain flexible in handling emerging challenges and avoid being caught off guard in any circumstance.
A key priority highlighted by the Government leader was the promotion of science and technology, innovation and digital transformation in defence production. These efforts are expected to create breakthroughs in the design, manufacturing, production, maintenance and modernisation of weapons and military equipment.
He also called for the effective implementation of major defence industry programmes and projects, particularly those involving high-technology products. He emphasised the importance of improving the quality of human resources and promoting the development of dual-use products that serve both national defence and socio-economic development.
According to reports presented at the meeting, Vietnam’s defence industry has made significant progress during the 2021–2025 period under the leadership of the Party, the State, the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence.
Several sectors have recorded positive results, including technological breakthroughs that demonstrate Vietnam’s growing capacity to research, design and manufacture modern weapons and military equipment under domestic brands.
Prime Minister Chinh praised the achievements of the armed forces in advancing the defence industry in recent years, noting that these efforts contribute to strengthening national self-reliance and accelerating the goal of building a revolutionary, regular, elite and modern army.
He expressed confidence that with its proud tradition, strong unity and determination for innovation, the Vietnam People's Army would continue to successfully accomplish all assigned tasks, contributing to safeguarding national sovereignty and supporting the country’s sustainable development.
