President calls on Military Region 7 to further modernise armed forces
VOV.VN - President Luong Cuong on December 9 urged Military Region 7 to continue enhancing its overall military strength and accelerating force modernisation, saying the region must be fully prepared to meet national defence requirements in a rapidly changing security environment.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Military Region 7’s armed forces (Dec. 10, 1945 – 2025), President praised the region’s armed forces for their outstanding achievements and long-standing contributions since their formation. He especially highlighted their role during the resistance war against American imperialism, including guerrilla operations in Cu Chi, the D Zone and the Rung Sac area, as well as key actions carried out by special forces and urban commandos.
The Military Region 7 also played a significant part in the 1975 Ho Chi Minh Campaign, contributing to the liberation of southern Vietnam. After reunification, the region continued to secure political stability, rebuild war-torn areas and later engaged in defending the southwest border while supporting Cambodia in its post-genocide recovery.
In recent decades, the region has been recognised for maintaining strong defence preparedness, building local defence structures and supporting socio-economic development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, its forces were deployed on the front line for emergency response, humanitarian assistance and social support programmes.
The President called on the regional Party Committee and Command to maintain the Party’s absolute and direct leadership in all aspects, and to thoroughly uphold Ho Chi Minh’s military thought and the country’s defence strategy.
He stressed the need to build a revolutionary, regular, elite and modern force, with stronger combat readiness and tighter management of airspace, maritime areas, borders, key locations and cyberspace. He also highlighted the importance of adopting new technologies, promoting innovation and accelerating digital transformation in military and defence activities.
The President asked the Military Region 7 to work closely with provincial authorities to consolidate local defence zones, strengthen reserve and militia forces, and stay prepared to handle both traditional and non-traditional security challenges at the grassroots level.
He suggested ensuring adequate logistics and technical support for all missions, improving troop welfare, maintaining strict discipline, and enhancing anti-corruption and internal oversight to prevent ideological decline or internal disruptions.
At the ceremony, President Cuong presented the “Hero of the People’s Armed Forces” title to the Military Region 7 in recognition of its outstanding achievements in training, combat readiness, and contributions to national defence.
