PM calls for additional assistance to storm-hit families
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has praised government agencies, localities and security forces for their swift implementation of a housing reconstruction campaign in central Vietnam, and called for additional financial support to help storm-affected families stabilise their lives ahead of the Lunar New Year.
Speaking at a virtual conference with central provinces on January 7, the PM commended the “extraordinary speed and determination” shown in the implementation of the so-called Quang Trung campaign, a government-led effort to rebuild and repair homes damaged by severe storms and floods late last year. He stressed that no household should be left without shelter by January 15.
The results so far demonstrate the strong mobilisation of the entire political system and society, he said, urging authorities to maintain momentum and complete the remaining work on schedule.
According to reports, subsequent storms and floods at the end of 2025 destroyed or swept away 1,597 homes and damaged another 34,759 across provinces from Quang Tri to Lam Dong. As of early January, repairs to all damaged homes had been completed, while 1,046 new houses had been rebuilt, representing 65.5% of the total requiring reconstruction. All remaining homes have been started, with construction progress ranging from 60% to more than 80%.
Most localities have pledged to finish rebuilding before or on January 15, government officials said, with a small number of households in Lam Dong and Dak Lak opting for larger homes expected to be completed shortly thereafter but still ahead of the Lunar New Year and the 14th National Party Congress.
The PM called on ministries, local governments and mass organisations to continue mobilising resources, particularly the armed forces and public security units, to ensure rapid completion. He urged round-the-clock construction efforts to meet the deadline.
Beyond housing construction, the Prime Minister proposed additional financial assistance to help affected families recover. He suggested providing VND5 million (nearly US$200) to each household whose home was repaired in eight central provinces, and VND10 million to households nationwide whose homes were destroyed and rebuilt this year, to support livelihoods and the purchase of essential household items.
He assigned the Vietnam Fatherland Front, in coordination with relevant ministries and localities, to review funding sources and oversee implementation to ensure transparency and efficiency. He also called for continued efforts to restore infrastructure, sanitation and transport, and to assess households’ basic needs, including essential appliances, to ensure that all affected families can celebrate the Lunar New Year in safe and stable conditions.
