People place high expectations on 14th National Party Congress
VOV.VN - The Communist Party of Vietnam is preparing for its 14th National Congress with a strong focus on institutional reform, development strategy and leadership renewal, according to officials at an international press briefing held in Hanoi on January 14.
The 14th National Party Congress will take place from Jan. 19 to 25, 2026, with 1,586 delegates representing more than 5.6 million Party members nationwide, Standing Secretary of the Party Central Committee Tran Cam Tu said.
New approach to policy documents
One of the most notable changes for the upcoming Congress is the overhaul of policy documentation. For the first time, three major reports – the Political Report, the Socio-Economic Report and the Party Building Report – have been consolidated into a single, unified Political Report to ensure consistency and coherence.
The document not only outlines development goals and orientations but also includes concrete action programmes, clearly defining tasks, timelines and responsibilities. Officials said the approach reflects the Party’s determination to translate resolutions into action immediately after the Congress.
Public consultation on the draft documents attracted nearly 14 million comments, highlighting strong public engagement and broad social consensus on the country’s future direction. Preparations for logistics, security and communications have also been conducted early and systematically.
Nguyen Xuan Thang, a Politburo member and President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, described the 14th Congress as a landmark political event that will shape Vietnam’s development trajectory in the coming decades.
He said the Vietnamese people are placing high expectations on the Congress to deliver strategic decisions that will help achieve national development goals ahead of the 100th anniversaries of the Communist Party of Vietnam (1930 - 2030) and the founding of the country (1945-2045).
Development mindset and new model
The Congress documents emphasise a renewed development mindset, with institutional reform for rapid and sustainable growth at the core. This approach extends beyond economic policy to cover culture, society, human development, national defence, security, foreign affairs, Party building and governance.
Sustainable development is defined around three pillars – economic, social and environmental – linked to cultural identity and political stability. The Congress is also expected to endorse a new growth model aligned with global trends such as digital transformation, green growth, energy transition and workforce development.
The translation of policy orientations into concrete solutions and action programmes is seen as a significant step toward narrowing the gap between policy formulation and implementation.
Leadership selection with high standards
Alongside policy preparation, personnel planning for the 14th Party Central Committee has been identified as a key task. Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Organisation Commission Nguyen Thanh Tam said the process has been carried out in a scientific, transparent and democratic manner since the start of the current term.
Candidate selection prioritises political integrity, competence, credibility and proven performance, while maintaining a balance between continuity and renewal. Prospective Central Committee members are expected to demonstrate leadership, accountability and a willingness to act in the national interest.
The personnel process also underscores a strict stance against corruption, misconduct and internal division, while ensuring capable and reputable officials are not overlooked.
The information released at the briefing indicates that the 14th National Congress is being prepared in a comprehensive and forward-looking manner, reflecting Vietnam’s ambition to advance towards prosperity and sustainable development in a new era.
