New State President of Vietnam to be elected, sworn in today
VOV.VN - The National Assembly is scheduled to elect a new State President of Vietnam at an extraordinary session in Hanoi on March 2.
Immediately after the vote, the new State President will be sworn in on the same day. The swearing-in ceremony will be broadcast live on the national radio and television system.
The Party Central Committee at its extraordinary meeting on March 1, introduced a presidential candidate for the National Assembly to vote.
The election takes place after the National Assembly approved a resolution at an extraordinary session on January 18, dismissing Nguyen Xuan Phuc from his post as State President of Vietnam and member of the National Assembly.
Phuc, 68, served as Prime Minister from 2016 to 2021, and was elected State President by the National Assembly in April 2021.
He had filed for resignation, saying he took the political responsibility when a number of officials under his management, including two Deputy Prime Ministers and 3 ministers, committed violations and wrongdoings, causing serious consequences.
Since Phuc stepped down, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan has acted as the caretaker president as assigned by the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
