National Assembly approves revised Law on Belief and Religion

VOV.VN - The National Assembly on April 23 unanimously adopted the revised Law on Belief and Religion, reinforcing the legal framework for religious freedom and introducing provisions on online religious activities.

All 492 deputies present voted in favour of the law, which comprises nine chapters and 61 articles and will take effect on January 1, 2027.

The law affirms that everyone has the right to freedom of belief and religion, including the right to follow or not follow any religion, express religious beliefs, practice rituals, participate in festivals, and study religious doctrines and laws.

Individuals are also entitled to enter religious life and receive training at religious institutions, with minors required to do so on a voluntary basis and with the consent of parents or legal guardians.

A notable addition is the regulation of religious activities in cyberspace. Relevant individuals and organisations, including religious leaders, institutions, and registered religious groups, are required to notify, register, or seek approval from competent authorities when conducting religious activities online in accordance with the law.

The law clearly defines the responsibilities of state agencies in guiding, monitoring, inspecting, and handling violations related to online religious activities. Organisations and individuals must comply with relevant legal provisions, while service providers and telecommunications enterprises are required to implement technical measures and coordinate with authorities to remove or block unlawful content.

Regarding offline practices, the law stipulates that belief-related activities at designated sites must be notified in advance to competent authorities, except for certain family-based worship facilities.

The revised law is expected to enhance transparency and consistency in the management of religious affairs, and ensure the legitimate rights and interests of individuals and communities.
