Key national media agencies placed under direct Party management

VOV.VN - Three key national media agencies of Vietnam - Voice of Vietnam (VOV), Vietnam Television (VTV), and Vietnam News Agency (VNA) – will transition from government-affiliated agencies to public service units under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The decision was approved at the second plenum of the 14th Party Central Committee that met in Hanoi from March 23-25. The Politburo has been tasked with directing relevant agencies to implement the policy in full by April 1.

This decision represents a strategic shift in the Party’s leadership of media and ideological work, enhancing centralised and comprehensive management, while better meeting the public’s demand for accurate and timely information in the digital age.

Speaking on the policy, Do Tien Sy, member of the Party Central Committee and President of VOV, emphasised that since its founding, the Party has consistently recognised the critical role of the press in promoting public awareness, advancing the nation’s revolutionary cause, and serving as a bridge between the Party and the people.

Placing the country’s core media agencies directly under the Party Central Committee not only reflects an innovative leadership approach but also enables these institutions to strengthen their position as strategic players in the cultural and ideological sphere, he said.

According to the VOV President, this new organisational model will allow national media agencies to assert control over the information space, protect national sovereignty in cyberspace, guide public opinion, and deliver effective policy communication.

In today’s fast-evolving media environment, state-run media must combine trustworthy content with appealing presentation while ensuring that journalists continuously enhance their professional expertise, political acumen, ethics, and technological skills, he said.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Hoai Son, member of the National Assembly, observed that in today’s multi-platform media ecosystem, VOV positions itself not merely as a traditional radio broadcaster but as a multi-format, cross-platform public media organisation, leading in official information dissemination and serving the public interest.

He noted that VOV is evolving from a “single broadcast wave” to an integrated media ecosystem, encompassing radio, digital newspapers, print media, social media channels, and domestic and international correspondent networks. Alongside platform expansion, VOV is pursuing comprehensive digital transformation in infrastructure, content, staffing, and operational models, aiming to become a leading national digital media hub.

Dr. Son highlighted that VOV’s core values sustaining its credibility are reliability, public service, and the ability to innovate without losing its foundational principles.

VOV must not only produce trustworthy content but also distribute it intelligently, leverage data analytics, and maintain a strong digital presence, he said.

Regarding radio, Dr. Son stressed that the medium remains uniquely intimate and accessible, accompanying audiences in everyday life and during emergencies - a role difficult for purely digital platforms to replace.

Radio must evolve from a “broadcast-first” mindset to a “content distribution where audiences are present” approach, embracing podcasts, mobile apps, smart speakers, connected vehicles, and social media alongside deepening analysis, storytelling, and real-time interaction.

By combining reliability, human-centred reporting, and community service, radio can maintain its significance in an increasingly fragmented media landscape.

With the direct management of the Party Central Committee, core national media agencies are expected not only to reinforce their leadership in official information but also to renew their influence in the digital era, solidifying their role as trusted pillars of Vietnam’s national media ecosystem.
