16th National Assembly to convene first session on April 6
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s 16th National Assembly is scheduled to convene its first session on April 6, shortly after the completion of the country’s 2026 election of deputies to the National Assembly, Chairman Tran Thanh Man said on February 23.
Speaking at a Lunar New Year meeting with senior Party officials, lawmakers and National Assembly staff in Hanoi, Chairman Man said preparations for the first session must begin early to ensure compliance with legal procedures and operational requirements.
The nationwide election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly and grassroots-level People’s Councils for the 2026–2031 term is scheduled for March 15.
According to the National Assembly, the first session will formally mark the start of the new legislative term and include the consolidation of key state leadership positions in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws.
The top legislator said the National Assembly Standing Committee and its Party Committee must adopt a detailed action programme to implement the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, as well as the 2026–2030 socio-economic development plan.
He described 2026 as a “breakthrough year” and the first year of implementing major national development goals.
The opening days of the session are expected to focus on organisational and personnel matters. Lawmakers will review election results, verify deputies’ eligibility and elect key leadership positions of the National Assembly and other state bodies within its authority.
Relevant agencies have been instructed to prepare documentation carefully and ensure all procedures are conducted in accordance with the law and on schedule. Coordination among Party, legislative and government bodies will be strengthened to facilitate the session.
The chairman also called for accelerated digital transformation within the National Assembly, including the application of artificial intelligence in legislative drafting, oversight and decision-making.
In addition to personnel matters, the session is expected to review reports on socio-economic performance and the state budget, as well as other legislative items.
