Vietnamese Party leader’s visit grabs Chinese headlines

VOV.VN - Chinese media outlets have run wide coverage of the ongoing state visit to China by Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Beijing Daily, the mouthpiece of the Beijing Party Committee, quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying as saying To Lam’s choice of China as the first country to visit after taking office fully reflects the high regard for developing relations between the two Parties and the two countries.

Zhao Weihua, director of the Center for China’s Relations with Neighboring Countries at Fudan University’s Institute of International Studies, also told Beijing Daily that To Lam’s first overseas trip to China after taking office demonstrates the importance of relations between the two countries.

He predicted that To Lam would have in-depth discussions with Chinese leaders in many fields such as the building of socialism, economic and trade cooperation and anti-corruption.

Meanwhile, Nie Hui Hui, who is in charge of the Vietnam project at the Institute of Southeast Asian and Oceanian Studies under the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, maintained that China-Vietnam relations would continue to stabilize and improve in the coming time.

Nie told Beijing Daily that by pursuing the bamboo diplomacy, Vietnam attaches great importance to relations with great powers such as China and the United States. Under the leadership of General Secretary and President To Lam, Vietnam would continue to maintain the balance between great powers and at the same time realize its own interest goals.

According to the expert, Vietnam has always been one of the fastest growing economies in the world since it embarked on the Doi Moi (Renewal) process in 1986.

“China and Vietnam are promoting cross-border standard gauge railway connection, as well as construction and infrastructure connection in border areas. Deepening infrastructure cooperation will further increase extensive cooperation in the fields of economics and trade between the two sides,” noted Nie.

Sharing the perspective, international relations commentator Guan Yao, in a statement on Shenzhen Cable TV of Guangdong province, said that To Lam’s visit is a continuation of tradition of the first visits of leaders of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Guan said among other things, high on the agenda would be discussions to further concretise the common perceptions of the two countries’ leaders on building a China-Vietnam community with a shared future that carries strategic significance.

In an article, Shanghai Observer placed an emphasis on economic-trade cooperation and cross-border standard gauge railway connection between the two countries. It cited sources saying two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and China is likely to exceed the US$200 billion mark this year on the back of their growing trade ties in recent times.

Xinmin Evening News of Shanghai quoted spokesperson Hua Chunying saying China was looking forward to To Lam’s visit to further strengthen the traditional friendship and deepen the building of the joint community with a shared future.

The media outlet also considered Vietnam as a rising star as it has received leaders of China, the United States and Russia on state visits since 2023. The development of bilateral relations is beneficial to the two Parties and two countries, as well as to peace and development and building unique socialism of each side, it concluded.
