Vietnam prioritises fostering relations with Brunei
VOV.VN - Vietnam prioritises enhancing its comprehensive partnership with Brunei, reaffirmed Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during his meeting with visiting Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei in Hanoi on December 1.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the Sultan’s visit marks an important milestone in assessing the achievements of bilateral cooperation and exploring new opportunities to elevate the relationship to a higher, more substantive, and effective level for the benefit of both countries.
He expressed his pleasure at meeting the Sultan again after their previous encounter at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, noting the significance of the Sultan’s visit in reinforcing ties between the two countries and advancing mutual cooperation in various areas.
Both leaders recognised the strong growth of the Vietnam-Brunei Comprehensive Partnership, particularly through the successful implementation of the Action Programme for 2023-2027.
Prime Minister Chinh highlighted the impressive achievements, particularly in economic cooperation, with bilateral trade projected to reach nearly US$671.4 million in 2024, a 165% increase compared to the previous year, surpassing the 2025 target ahead of schedule.
He proposed that both sides continue to prioritise high-level exchanges and utilise bilateral cooperation mechanisms effectively. He also urged the two countries to focus on expanding cooperation in key areas such as oil and gas, chemicals, Halal food processing, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
Vietnam also requested Brunei’s continued support for Vietnamese companies in providing oil and gas services, recognising Halal certification for exports, and integrating into the global supply chain.
The Prime Minister also proposed strengthening maritime cooperation, particularly in sustainable fisheries management and combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Vietnam is committed to safeguarding marine resources and has implemented strong measures to combat IUU fishing, he assured his guest.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah voiced Brunei's commitment to further strengthening ties with Vietnam and expressed a strong interest in advancing cooperation in energy, fisheries, Halal industries, and people-to-people exchanges. The Sultan also conveyed his sympathy for the people of Vietnam affected by recent floods and landslides in central provinces.
The two leaders also agreed to enhance cooperation at international forums such as ASEAN and the United Nations, with a focus on maintaining ASEAN's unified stance on regional issues such as Myanmar and the East Sea, contributing to peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region and beyond.
On this occasion, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah invited Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to visit Brunei at a mutually convenient time. The Prime Minister graciously accepted the invitation.
