Vietnam highlights role in advancing multilateralism at ASEAN–GRULAC meeting

VOV.VN - Vietnam underscored its proactive and responsible role in promoting multilateralism and strengthening cooperation among developing countries at a meeting between ASEAN and the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC) held in Vienna, Austria, on April 8.

Addressing the meeting, Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang emphasised the importance of enhancing coordination among developing nations and called for greater transparency and efficiency in the allocation and use of resources within the United Nations system. He also proposed closer ASEAN–GRULAC cooperation to strengthen a common voice at multilateral forums.

The ambassador expressed appreciation to countries that participated in the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime in Hanoi in 2025, describing it as a strong demonstration of international cooperation and shared commitment in addressing non-traditional security challenges.

On nuclear issues, the Vietnamese representative reaffirmed the central role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in global nuclear governance, particularly in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy, ensuring safety and security, and implementing safeguards to enhance transparency and trust.

He highlighted the close linkage between the IAEA’s work and the implementation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), stressing the need to maintain a balanced approach among its three pillars: non-proliferation, disarmament and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Vietnam also affirmed its readiness in assuming the role of President of the 11th NPT Review Conference in April 2026, approaching the responsibility with objectivity, responsibility and a commitment to fostering constructive dialogue through broad consultations with regional groups and member states, including GRULAC.

Vietnam suggested that ASEAN and GRULAC enhance coordination in identifying shared priorities and advancing initiatives that promote connectivity, aiming for balanced outcomes that reflect the interests of all member states, particularly developing countries.

Despite differences, countries share a common interest in maintaining the credibility and effectiveness of the NPT, with the success of the review process depending on goodwill, flexibility and the ability to bridge differences.

According to the Vietnamese representative, ASEAN is expected to continue working closely with GRULAC to uphold the integrity of the treaty while ensuring adequate attention to development aspects, especially Pillar III on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including technology access, capacity building and technical cooperation through the IAEA.

The meeting between heads of ASEAN missions and GRULAC provided a platform to discuss measures to strengthen coordination at multilateral forums in Vienna.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular exchanges, enhancing coordination and contributing to the strengthening of multilateralism, thereby supporting effective responses to global challenges and advancing sustainable development.

The discussions reflected a shared commitment to peace, security, safety and sustainable development, as well as highlighting Vietnam’s increasingly active and responsible role in key multilateral processes, particularly in the nuclear field.
