Vietnam champions multilateralism and global cooperation, says Party leader To Lam

VOV.VN - Vietnam strongly supports multilateralism and global cooperation, Party General Secretary To Lam told United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during a meeting in Hanoi on October 25.

Secretary-General Guterres attended the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime (the Hanoi Convention) in Hanoi on October 25. The signing of the Convention also marks the 80th founding anniversary of the United Nations (1945–2025).

General Secretary To Lam expressed his pleasure at meeting Secretary-General Guterres again and extended appreciation for the UN’s longstanding support and partnership with Vietnam since the country joined the organisation in 1977.

He affirmed that Vietnam–UN relations have become one of the most remarkable success stories of international cooperation and are now entering a new, deeper, and more comprehensive stage of development.

Reiterating Vietnam’s strong support for multilateralism with the UN at its core, the Party General Secretary stressed that multilateral cooperation is the only viable path to effectively address global challenges, from maintaining peace and resolving conflicts to promoting development, ensuring human rights, and tackling climate change.

Vietnam is deeply aware of its responsibility to the international community and stands ready to engage more proactively in peacekeeping, development cooperation, and efforts for the common good of humanity, the Party leader said.

He reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of settling disputes by peaceful means, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law, while placing people at the centre of all policies and advancing sustainable development, innovation, digital transformation, and environmental protection.

Vietnam, he added, is ready to share its experience in economic growth, agriculture, health, and education with other countries, contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Party leader also expressed appreciation for the trust of UN member states in electing Vietnam to the Human Rights Council for two consecutive terms, viewing it as recognition of the country’s unwavering commitment to protecting human rights and improving people’s well-being.

For his part, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended Vietnam’s remarkable achievements since overcoming war and embargo, highlighting not only its strong economic performance but also its steadfast commitment to climate action, sustainable development, and peacekeeping contributions.

He expressed confidence that under the leadership of General Secretary To Lam, Vietnam would continue to achieve high growth, enhance its international standing, and become a prominent voice in strengthening multilateralism.

He described Vietnam as a key pillar of South–South cooperation, contributing to building a balanced, multipolar world order based on international law. He encouraged the country to continue supporting UN reform efforts to better reflect the interests of developing and emerging nations while opposing unilateralism in international relations.

Both leaders agreed that in a world facing mounting instability, dialogue, cooperation, and global solidarity remain the only path toward peace, security, and sustainable development.

They also underscored the importance of ASEAN–UN cooperation, calling it a model for regional peace, consensus-building, and inclusive growth.

General Secretary To Lam reaffirmed Vietnam’s readiness to work with the UN and the international community in building a peaceful, stable, equitable, and sustainable world in line with the spirit of multilateralism that Vietnam has consistently upheld and advanced.
