Vietnam eyes semiconductor cooperation with Dutch chip giant ASML

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on January 15 met Eduard Stiphout, Senior Vice President of Dutch semiconductor giant ASML, calling on the company to expand cooperation in training, research and supply-chain development as Vietnam accelerates its push into the global semiconductor industry.

Welcoming ASML’s interest in Vietnam, the Prime Minister said it reflects growing confidence among leading global technology firms in Vietnam’s investment climate and long-term development potential, while also contributing to deeper and more substantive Vietnam–Netherlands relations in science, technology, innovation and digital transformation.

According to the PM, Vietnam is entering a strategic transformation phase, targeting double-digit economic growth from 2026 and aiming to become a developed country by 2045, with science, technology, innovation and digital transformation identified as key growth drivers.

It is improving institutions and policy frameworks, investing in modern digital and telecommunications infrastructure, and accelerating the development of high-quality human resources to meet the stringent requirements of the semiconductor industry.

The Prime Minister highlighted the emergence of a semiconductor ecosystem in Vietnam, with the presence of global firms such as Samsung, Intel, NVIDIA, VDL-ETG, Tecnotion and Coherent, alongside capable Vietnamese technology companies including Viettel and FPT.

He urged ASML to accelerate the establishment of a semiconductor training, research and development centre in Vietnam, and to support Vietnamese firms in joining ASML’s global supply chain to enhance its resilience and diversification in Asia.

He also encouraged ASML to consider opening a representative office in Vietnam, providing technical support, sharing management expertise and assisting local companies in meeting global technology standards.

He reaffirmed the Vietnamese government’s commitment to creating favourable conditions for foreign investors, including ASML, to operate and expand sustainably in Vietnam.

For his part, Stiphout said ASML, a key link in the global semiconductor value chain, highly values Vietnam’s development strategy centred on technology and innovation. He said the company is studying options to expand its supply chain presence in Vietnam, cooperate on training and R&D initiatives, establish an official presence and potentially supply equipment to future customers in the country.
