Vietnam chairs UN consultation on Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

VOV.VN - Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, on October 6 chaired the first informal consultation with State Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), in his capacity as the designated President of the 11th NPT Review Conference, scheduled for April 2026.

The consultation, taking place at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA, aimed to exchange preliminary views on the orientation, priorities, and preparation process for the upcoming Review Conference.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Viet emphasised that Vietnam’s appointment as President of the NPT Review Conference reflects the international community’s recognition of its role, credibility, and capacity in promoting dialogue, facilitating negotiations, and building consensus on key global issues.

This is a significant responsibility and a strong demonstration of Vietnam’s commitment to the NPT in particular and to global disarmament and non-proliferation efforts in general, said the diplomat.

While acknowledging the current complex and challenging international environment, he noted that this also presents opportunities to foster cooperation in this crucial field. He called on all countries to engage in a spirit of constructiveness, compromise, and innovation, working towards a substantive and successful conference in 2026.

The Ambassador affirmed his intention to lead the consultation process based on the principles of transparency, balance, and inclusiveness, ensuring that the voices and perspectives of all State Parties are respected and heard. He called for collective efforts to strengthen the global disarmament and non-proliferation architecture and to demonstrate the highest level of political will and responsibility toward reducing and ultimately eliminating nuclear weapons.

During the meeting, delegates of participating countries shared their views on priorities for the upcoming Review Conference across the NPT’s three pillars - nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Several states emphasised the importance of adopting practical measures to improve the effectiveness of discussions, enhance transparency and accountability in fulfilling disarmament obligations, and promote meaningful dialogue among parties to ensure effective implementation of the Treaty.

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, adopted in 1968 and entering into force in 1970, serves as the cornerstone of the global regime on nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The NPT Review Conference is held every five years to assess implementation and chart the way forward. The 11th edition, scheduled to take place in New York in 2026, carries the important mission of restoring consensus and reinforcing commitments to the Treaty amid a highly complex and unpredictable global security landscape.
