Vietnam supports nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation efforts
VOV.VN - Vietnam supports nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation efforts, as well as the legitimate right of all countries to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, was speaking at a High-Level Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to mark International Day Against Nuclear Tests, held in New York, USA, on September 3.
He emphasised the significance of the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and called on all countries to actively contribute to strengthening this process.
Together with other ASEAN countries, Vietnam calls for continued international support for the implementation of the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), considering it a meaningful contribution to regional and global peace and security, he said.
In her opening remarks, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu noted that even 80 years after the first atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world still faces real threats from nuclear weapons testing. She stressed that ending nuclear tests is a shared responsibility to ensure international peace and security.
As the world prepares to mark the 30th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT)’s opening for signature, the Executive Secretary of the CTBT Organisation and representatives from many countries called on all states that have not yet signed or ratified the Treaty to urgently complete the process.
International Day against Nuclear Tests, observed annually on August 29, was established by the UN General Assembly in 2010 following a proposal by Kazakhstan. The day aims to raise global awareness of the devastating consequences of nuclear weapons testing on human life and the environment, and serves as a call for the international community to work together to end nuclear testing and eliminate nuclear weapons for a peaceful, secure, and sustainable world.
