Vietnam calls for new thinking, new approaches to global challenges
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President To Lam has called on countries and organisations to adopt new thinking and new approaches to global challenges, in response to the United Nations Summit of the Future Global Call.
In his pre-recorded message to the event, To Lam noted that the Summit of the Future is an opportunity for the UN and multilateralism to affirm irreplaceable values in the face of the great challenges of the time. He expressed the hope that the Summit focus discussions on transformative solutions, including transformation in science-technology and innovation, green transformation, and global governance transformation.
With regard to science and technology, To Lam emphasized the leading role of the UN in establishing a legal framework, supporting countries in developing new and pioneering technologies such as digital technology, artificial intelligence, and automation in a safe, equitable, beneficial, and inclusive manner.
On green transformation, he proposed studying the establishment of a global forum for ASEAN and other regional organizations to share experiences and promote green technology.
For global governance, the Vietnamese leader expressed a desire to advance the reform of the UN and multilateral financial institutions to respond more effectively to global challenges and better mobilize resources to support developing countries.
He reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to making a positive contribution to the summit and joint efforts to strengthen peace, cooperation, and international solidarity, aiming to effectively achieve Sustainable Development Goals and ensure that people fully benefit from development outcomes and are prepared for future generations.
In his speech, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the historic significance of the Summit and expressed hope that the documents expected to be adopted at the Summit will provide a crucial foundation for guiding cooperation of the UN system in the future.
The leaders’ messages underscored strong support for the Summit and expected that the event will reach consensus on specific solutions and actions to reinforce peace, cooperation, and accelerate the gains of Sustainable Development Goals.
The Summit of the Future is a top multilateral meeting of the UN to be held in New York on September 22-23. Themed “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Future,” the Summit aims to promote the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and climate goals, unify solutions to global challenges, and strengthen global governance. It is expected to adopt documents that will guide the activities of the UN system.
The Global Call for the Summit of the Future is an initiative of Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The two countries co-chair negotiations of documents to be debated at the summit.
