Vietnam pays special attention to sustainable infrastructure development

VOV.VN - Building a modern and synchronous infrastructure system is one of three strategic breakthroughs of the Government of Vietnam towards sustainable development, said Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN at a UN General Assembly debate on infrastructure connectivity in New York on April 18 (local time).

According to the diplomat, Vietnam is one of Asia’s leading countries in infrastructure investment, spending 5.7% of its Gross Domestic Product on projects in this field.

To date, Vietnam has put into operation 1,729km of highways and strives to raise the figure to 3,000km by 2025. At the same time, it continues to develop infrastructure connectivity with neighboring countries, including Laos, thereby promoting regional and inter-regional connectivity.

The government of Vietnam continues to give priority to sustainable infrastructure development by increasing investment in renewable energy and green transportation, as well as encouraging the production and use of electric vehicles, he stressed.

In his view, promoting connectivity between and within countries is essential for economic development, job creation, ensuring supply chain efficiency and enhancing sustainability.

To do this, he proposed strengthening international cooperation and solidarity, through financial and technical support especially for developing countries, in order to narrow the infrastructure development gap.

Countries should strengthen the resilience of their infrastructure systems through investments in renewable energy, green transport technology and digital infrastructure, with institutional and financial contributions from both public and private sectors, said the diplomat.

He also stressed the need to link infrastructure connectivity to national and regional initiatives, including the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 for instance, which aims to enhance regional connectivity and support regional infrastructure projects throughout their lifecycle.

The UN General Assembly debate is part of the Sustainability Week which is getting underway from April 15-19. The initiative put forward by the President of the 78th UN General Assembly aims to gain political commitments of world leaders towards promoting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
