Vietnam calls for increased budget allocation for development issues

VOV.VN - A Vietnamese diplomat on October 17 called for additional budget to be allocated for development issues, at a meeting of the Fifth Committee of the UN General Assembly that deals with the UN administrative and budgetary matters.

Minister Councilor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, deputy head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, noted that as the implementation of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 moves more slowly than expected, more resources should be prioritized for the development pillar.

He voiced Vietnam’s support for measures to ensure budget allocation for the Development Account, a capacity development programme of the United Nations Secretariat aiming at enhancing capacities of developing countries in the priority areas of the United Nations Development Agenda, and the ongoing Regular Programme of Technical Cooperation to assist developing countries.

Vietnam endorses the Secretary-General’s efforts to reposition the UN development system and conduct a comprehensive review to enhance effectiveness and find solutions to secure operational budgets for Resident Coordinators worldwide, he said.

In light of the budget liquidity challenges that have led the UN to implement cost-cutting measures, the Vietnamese representative urged member states to fully meet their contributions to the organization’s annual budget.

Vietnam, a responsible UN member and member of the international community, is committed to fulfilling its contributions on time, affirmed the diplomat.

At the meeting in New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and representatives from various countries emphasized the necessity of ensuring a budget for the UN to carry out its designated tasks and plans, especially in the development sector.

In the context of a world facing multiple challenges, the budget plan proposed by the Secretary-General for 2025 reflects priorities aimed at reforming and enhancing the effectiveness of the UN’s operations, aligning with major guidelines outlined in the recent UN Summit on the Future held in September.
