Vietnam calls for strengthening partnership for sustainable development

VOV.VN - A Vietnamese official called for stronger international partnerships to address global challenges at a session of the Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, taking place in New York from October 7-9.

Addressing the general debate, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, expressed concern that approximately 80% of the Sustainable Development Goals are at risk of not being achieved on time due to the impacts of political tensions, humanitarian crises, climate challenges, and rising inequality.

Nevertheless, he said the international community has shown strong commitment to implementing the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 at the 2023 Sustainable Development Summit and in the adoption of the Pact for the Future.

To achieve sustainable development, Giang stressed the need to reform the international financial structure, including international financial institutions and multilateral development banks, to ensure the participation of developing countries in global economic governance.

Countries should continue to enhance the sustainability of their economies through effective economic policies and international partners’ support to secure financing for development, while leveraging advancements in science-technology, innovation, and artificial intelligence, including the effective implementation of the global digital agreement, he said.

According to the Vietnamese diplomat, climate action should be intensified through the fulfillment of commitments and increased financing for climate initiatives. Transitioning to renewable energy is an essential path to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a more sustainable future.

Vietnam welcomes support of the United Nations and international partners in realizing the just energy transition partnership (JETP), and expects additional support for developing countries, he stated.

Giang also suggested eradicating poverty and ensuring food security for all by promoting sustainable agriculture, diversifying crops, sustaining food supply chains, and increasing investment in education and job creation. He expressed solidarity with the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries, and small island developing states, urging the enhancement of the action program for these countries.

Vietnam currently ranks 55th out of 166 countries in the progress of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. However, much work remains to restructure the economy, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and respond to natural disasters.

Ambassador Giang emphasized the necessity of strengthening partnerships to provide financing for development and technology transfer.

Vietnam is ready to cooperate with all relevant partners toward a sustainable future where no one is left behind, he stated.

Delegates shared their views on the intertwined difficulties and challenges in implementing the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, calling for collaboration to address challenges related to the economy, finance, climate, and poverty reduction.
