Vietnam attaches importance to stronger partnership with US, says PM
VOV.VN - Vietnam places high importance on its relationship with the United States and seeks to continue strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the benefit of both nations and regional stability, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said on January 10 while receiving outgoing US Ambassador Marc Knapper.
During the meeting, the PM praised Knapper and the US Embassy for their close coordination, which helped advance key milestones in bilateral ties over the past four years, including the upgrade of relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He described this as a solid foundation for a new phase of cooperation.
The Vietnamese leader reaffirmed the country’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation, multilateralism, and diversification of external relations, alongside its “Four No's defence policy.
Looking ahead, PM Chinh called for continued high-level exchanges to build political trust and momentum for deeper bilateral cooperation. He emphasised that economic and trade relations remain a cornerstone of the partnership and praised Knapper’s role in expanding market access and encouraging US investment in Vietnam.
He proposed enhancing US-Vietnam cooperation in technology transfer and digital transformation. He also proposed that the US soon recognise Vietnam’s market economy status, and remove the country from lists restricting high-tech exports (D1 and D3).
The PM expressed optimism that negotiations on a reciprocal, fair, and balanced trade agreement would soon conclude, providing stability and tangible benefits to the two business communities.
The Vietnamese leader highlighted the significance of joint efforts to address war legacy issues, noting Knapper’s dedication in this area and stressing that continued cooperation would foster trust, reconciliation, and mutual understanding.
On regional and international issues, PM Chinh urged adherence to the UN Charter and international law, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and US support for ASEAN’s positions to maintain peace, stability, security, and freedom of navigation in the region.
For his part, Ambassador Knapper welcomed the growth of US-Vietnam ties, calling them a model in international relations. He highlighted potential cooperation in political, security, trade, energy, humanitarian, science and technology, and human resource development sectors.
The diplomat expressed confidence that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership would continue to strengthen, and pledged to remain a friend of Vietnam in any capacity.
