Vietnam strengthens comprehensive strategic partnership with United States
VOV.VN - Party General Secretary To Lam reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to deepening its comprehensive strategic partnership with the United States, during his reception for outgoing US Ambassador Marc Knapper in Hanoi on January 9.
During the farewell meeting at the Party Central Committee headquarters, the Party leader praised the diplomat for his contributions to enhancing Vietnam – US ties across politics, trade, defence, post-war cooperation, and science-technology sectors.
The General Secretary emphasised that Vietnam seeks to expand cooperation with the US, including through mutually beneficial trade agreements, while maintaining an independent, self-reliant, and multilateral foreign policy.
He highlighted Vietnam’s progress since the 13th National Party Congress, particularly in innovation, science, and technology, and noted that the upcoming 14th congress would mark a new stage of national development for peace, independence, and sustainable prosperity.
On regional security, the Party leader called for respect of international law, and peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue and other peaceful measures. He also called for continued US support for stability, security, and freedom of navigation in line with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The top leader expressed confidence that, in any future role, Ambassador Marc Knapper would continue to support the advancement of Vietnam-US relations and help the two countries achieve further milestones.
Ambassador Knapper thanked the Party, State, and people of Vietnam for their support during his tenure, and congratulated the country on sustained economic growth and rising living standards, as well as its rising position globally.
He recalled major milestones in Vietnam-US relations during his term, including the upgrade of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September 2023 and the celebrations marking 30 years of diplomatic relations. He affirmed that, regardless of his future role, he would continue to dedicate his efforts to strengthening the partnership, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and prosperity in the region and beyond.
