Diplomats talk 30 years of Vietnam–US relations and future directions
VOV.VN - Voice of Vietnam Radio (VOV) held a talk show themed “30 Years of Vietnam–US Diplomatic Relations: Building Peace for Cooperation, Development and Prosperity” on August 22, with the participation of US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper and Ambassador Ha Kim Ngoc, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Ambassador of Vietnam to the United States.

During the programme, the two ambassadors reflected on key milestones in bilateral ties, from the normalisation of relations in 1995 to the elevation of the partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023. They also shared new directions to further deepen and make the relationship more substantive and effective.
Receiving the two special guests after the show, VOV President Do Tien Sy emphasised VOV’s role in delivering timely, multidimensional, and accurate information to both domestic and international audiences, contributing to strengthening Vietnam–US relations.
According to the VOV President, the normalisation of diplomatic relations with the United States marked a significant milestone in Vietnam’s journey of international integration. Fifty years after the end of the war and 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the Vietnam–US relationship has made great strides, meeting the aspirations and interests of the peoples of both countries. It has also made positive contributions to peace, stability, and development in the Asia–Pacific region and around the world.
“As a key national media outlet, VOV has always accompanied the important milestones of our two countries, highlighting the growing friendship and mutual respect between the Vietnamese and American people,” said Sy. “We believe the media will continue to serve as a powerful bridge, helping to elevate our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to new heights.”
Vietnam and the United States have established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a new phase of extensive cooperation across various fields. Over the past three decades, the relationship has served as a vivid testament to both countries’ efforts to break with the past, build mutual trust, and foster an increasingly deep, effective, and substantive partnership.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Knapper shared that many meaningful activities have been jointly carried out by the two sides in recent years to heal the wounds of war. In particular, the American people are deeply grateful for Vietnam’s active support in the search for US servicemen missing in action (MIA) from the war.
In his view, the search for American MIAs has not only received support from the central government of Vietnam but also from local authorities and people. These efforts will continue, alongside dioxin remediation at Bien Hoa Airbase and unexploded ordnance clearance in central provinces of Vietnam.
Three decades of normalized relations and multifaceted cooperation have yielded substantial benefits for both countries. The United States is now one of Vietnam’s largest trading partners and the first export market of Vietnam to surpass the US$100 billion mark. Conversely, Vietnam has also become one of the United States’ leading trading partners.
