Vietnam attaches importance to its comprehensive partnership with Hungary
VOV.VN - President Luong Cuong and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received visiting Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary Laszlo Kover at separate meetings in Hanoi on October 20, affirming Vietnam values the strengthening of its comprehensive partnership with Hungary.

President Cuong and Prime Minister Chinh warmly welcomed Speaker Kover’s visit which takes place on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Hungary (1950–2025). The leaders noted that the visit demonstrates the high level of mutual trust and long-standing traditional friendship between the two countries and contributes to promoting the Vietnam–Hungary Comprehensive Partnership in a more substantive and effective manner.
The Vietnamese leaders appreciated Hungary’s valuable support and assistance to Vietnam during its struggle for national independence and reunification in the past, as well as in its current process of national construction and development. They assured their guest that Vietnam regards Hungary as a leading priority partner and its first Comprehensive Partner in Central and Eastern Europe.
Speaker Kover expressed his pleasure at returning to Vietnam after 10 years, conveying the greetings of President Tamas Sulyok, Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and other Hungarian leaders to President Luong Cuong and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. He thanked the Vietnamese leaders and people for their warm and respectful welcome, emphasising that Hungary wishes to strengthen its relations with Vietnam, a key partner in Southeast Asia.
At the meetings, both sides spoke highly of the positive developments in Vietnam–Hungary relations in recent years, especially since the establishment of the Comprehensive Partnership in 2018. Cooperation has been expanded across various fields such as politics, diplomacy, economy, trade, education and training, culture, defence and security, science and technology, and the environment. Economic and trade cooperation has been a highlight, with bilateral trade maintained at around US$1 billion annually.

To further enhance the effectiveness and substance of bilateral ties, President Cuong and Prime Minister Chinh proposed that the two sides increase high-level contacts and exchanges at all levels to strengthen political trust, and boost trade and investment cooperation, striving to raise bilateral trade to US$2 billion in the coming time. They agreed to expand collaboration in areas of potential and strength such as science and technology, peaceful use of nuclear energy, pharmaceuticals, innovation, water security, education and training, culture, tourism, and labour. They also underlined the importance of promoting people-to-people exchanges to foster mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries.
Both sides agreed that parliamentary cooperation is an important pillar of bilateral relations. Speaker Kover noted that all political parties in the Hungarian National Assembly support the strengthening of ties with Vietnam, and affirmed that the National Assembly of Hungary would continue to work closely with the National Assembly of Vietnam to effectively implement high-level agreements, improve the legal framework for cooperation, and support both governments in promoting collaboration across all areas.
On economic cooperation, both sides appreciated that Hungary was among the first EU member states to ratify the EU–Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA). Speaker Kover said that Hungary would continue to encourage other EU parliaments to ratify the agreement and support efforts by the European Commission to remove the “yellow card” warning on Vietnam’s seafood exports.
The two sides also agreed to continue coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums, including the United Nations and the ASEAN–EU framework, thereby contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world at large.
Prime Minister Chinh called on the National Assembly of Hungary to continue supporting Vietnam and ASEAN’s position on the East Sea, resolving disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
On this occasion, Speaker Kover conveyed an invitation from President Tamas Sulyok to President Luong Cuong to pay an official visit to Hungary. President Cuong gratefully accepted the invitation, noting that the visit would be arranged through diplomatic channels.
