Vietnam and US hold Political-Security-Defence Dialogue in Washington

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Regional Security in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs Fleet White co-chaired the 14th Vietnam - US Political – Security -Defence Dialogue in Washington D.C. on December 18.

The annual mechanism reviews and sets directions for cooperation in political, security and defence fields, enhances mutual understanding and trust, and promotes stable and substantive development of Vietnam - US relations.

At the dialogue, both sides reviewed bilateral ties after 30 years of diplomatic relations and two years of implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, noting continued positive progress. The Vietnamese side reaffirmed that it regards the United States as one of its leading strategic partners and welcomed stronger US engagement contributing to peace, stability and development in the region.

The US side described Vietnam–US relations over the past three decades as a model in international relations, transforming from former woes into comprehensive strategic partners. It reiterated its desire to further promote mutually beneficial cooperation based on respect for Vietnam’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political system, and expressed support for a strong, prosperous and self-reliant Vietnam.

Both sides acknowledged notable achievements in cooperation, particularly high-level and ministerial exchanges, enhanced law enforcement capacity building, efforts to combat transnational crime, responses to non-traditional security challenges, and effective implementation of projects addressing war legacy issues, including the search for US personnel missing in action (MIA).

The US appreciated Vietnam’s cooperation on MIA efforts and reaffirmed its commitment to expanding dioxin remediation and unexploded ordnance clearance projects, as well as promoting new initiatives to support information sharing and DNA identification for missing Vietnamese soldiers.

The two sides highlighted the importance of existing bilateral political, defence and security mechanisms as key channels for information exchange, managing differences and advancing practical and sustainable cooperation.

Building on the dialogue’s outcomes, both sides agreed to further deepen cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and gradually expand collaboration in potential areas such as defence industry, maritime law enforcement capacity building, specialised coordination in crime prevention and control, and high-technology governance.

They also exchanged views on regional and international security issues, stressing the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight; exercising restraint; refraining from the use or threat of force; and resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Both sides reaffirmed ASEAN’s central role in the regional architecture.

Concluding the dialogue, the two sides agreed to continue maintaining and enhancing the effectiveness of the Political–Security–Defence Dialogue, increase exchanges and consultations at all levels, especially high-level, and effectively implement agreed cooperation contents, contributing to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the benefit of both peoples and for peace, stability and development in the region and the world.

During his visit, Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang also held meetings with President of the International Republican Institute Daniel Twining, representatives of the National Democratic Institute, and Co-chairs of the Communist Party USA Joe Sims and Rossana Cambron to brief them on Vietnam’s preparations for the 14th National Party Congress and discuss future party-to-party cooperation. He also met with representatives of US organisations, businesses and scholars to exchange views on bilateral, regional and international issues of shared interest.
