Vietnam pledges to promote fair, mutually beneficial cooperation with United States

VOV.VN - Vietnam always values and seeks to foster a fair and mutually beneficial economic and trade partnership with the United States, said Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son at the eighth US - Vietnam Business Summit in Hanoi on November 12.

“Vietnam is committed to building a stable and favourable business environment for the global business community, particularly for US enterprises, to work together, win together, share together, and grow together for the long term in Vietnam,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasised.

He noted that 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States - a remarkable journey from former woes to trusted partners. He summarised the bilateral relationship in five key phrases of strategic trust, comprehensive cooperation, shared growth, responsible partnership, and co-creating the future.

Over the past decades, bilateral relations have expanded well beyond traditional cooperation to encompass all areas. The United States is now one of Vietnam’s largest trading partners and the first export market for Vietnam to surpass the US$100 billion mark. Most leading US corporations are now present and investing effectively in Vietnam, contributing to innovation and technological development.

At the summit, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son proposed five key cooperation priorities to deepen the strategic partnership and deliver tangible benefits for both sides.

He underlined the importance of expanding collaboration in semiconductors and high technology, focusing on the development of a robust semiconductor ecosystem, alongside the establishment of R&D centres, data centres, and artificial intelligence hubs in Vietnam.

In the field of clean energy and green growth, he called for stronger joint efforts in offshore wind, solar power, hydrogen, energy storage, and smart grid development, supporting Vietnam’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the need to strengthen strategic supply chains through the creation of flexible, diversified, and sustainable production networks. This includes expanding smart logistics connectivity and fostering partnerships between Vietnamese enterprises and major US retailers such as Walmart and Costco, enabling Vietnamese goods to engage more deeply in global value chains.

He encouraged enhanced cooperation in innovation and digital transformation, promoting digital trade, cross-border digital services, and electronic payments, as well as partnerships in AI, cybersecurity, and cloud computing. Vietnamese companies, he suggested, should also work closely with US pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms to develop digital health and community healthcare ecosystems.

In addition, the Deputy Prime Minister underscored the need for joint efforts in education, training, and technology transfer, with a focus on cultivating engineers, semiconductor specialists, and global managers, while strengthening linkages between universities and research institutions in both countries.

The Government official also encouraged the US business community to play an active role in promoting high-level exchanges, supporting the US Government’s early recognition of Vietnam as a full market economy, and advocating the removal of export-control restrictions (Lists D1 and D3) to facilitate trade and technology cooperation.

Representing the United States, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Michael DeSombre underlined Vietnam’s strong potential in attracting foreign direct investment and its emerging role as a critical hub in global supply chains. He affirmed that US firms are ready to take the lead in developing diversified, sustainable, and responsible production networks in Vietnam.

US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper praised the contributions of the private sector to bilateral relations and reaffirmed the US commitment to supporting Vietnam’s development goals, especially in innovation, clean energy, digital transformation, and high-quality human capital.

Taking the floor, Dr. Ho Sy Hung, Chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), noted that Vietnam–US cooperation is built not only on economic and commercial ties but also on mutual trust and a shared strategic vision.

That trust has been nurtured through years of sincere collaboration, shared interests, and a common goal of prosperity, he said.

He also assured that VCCI would continue to serve as a trusted bridge between the two governments and business communities, working closely with the American Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi (AmCham) and the US Chamber of Commerce to promote new initiatives and help US firms deepen partnerships with Vietnamese enterprises, towards a transparent, stable, and socially responsible investment environment.

AmCham Chairman Michael Nguyen reaffirmed AmCham’s long-term commitment to accompany Vietnam in its next stage of development, while AmCham Executive Director Adam Sitkoff stressed the joint responsibility of both business communities to promote two-way trade and investment and work with both governments to address remaining barriers.

Experts viewed the Vietnam–US Business Summit as a key annual policy dialogue platform that helps shape cooperative strategies, strengthen mutual understanding, and advance a fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial economic partnership — contributing to a sustainable, dynamic, and prosperous shared future for both countries.
