Vietnam and Laos deepen strategic alignment, set cooperation priorities

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic alignment and strengthening their special relationship following high-level talks in Vientiane on April 9.

During the meeting, Tran Cam Tu, Politburo member and Permanent member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee conveyed greetings from top Vietnamese leaders and congratulated Laos on its recent political achievements, including the successful organisation of the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and the formation of a new leadership apparatus.

He reiterated Vietnam’s consistent policy of giving top priority to its “great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation” with Laos, describing the relationship as a “priceless asset” and a key pillar for sustainable development and regional stability.

On the Lao side, Vilay Lakhamphong, Politburo member and Permanent member of the Secretariat of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee welcomed the visit as a strong signal of the special bond between the two countries, noting that Tu’s selection of Laos as the first destination in the new term reflects the depth of bilateral ties.

Lakhamphong expressed sincere appreciation for the great, wholehearted and effective support that the Party, State and people of Vietnam have consistently extended to Laos.

He reaffirmed that the Lao Party and State always attach great importance to, and give top priority to developing, the special relationship with Vietnam, considering it one of the foremost strategic tasks in Laos’ foreign policy.

On this occasion, he congratulated Vietnam on its significant achievements, particularly the successful organisation of major political events, the consolidation of its leadership apparatus, and the continued maintenance of socio-economic stability and development.

Both sides held extensive discussions on Party building, governance, anti-corruption efforts and socio-economic development, sharing practical experiences in implementing Party congress resolutions and improving state management effectiveness.

They agreed to further deepen strategic alignment, ensuring closer, more effective and substantive coordination across all areas, particularly in economic cooperation, infrastructure connectivity, education and training, and science and technology.

The two sides also underscored the importance of strengthening defence and security cooperation, enhancing coordination in combating transnational crime, and maintaining close consultation on regional and international issues.

They placed special emphasis on the need to further deepen the substance of strategic alignment in Vietnam–Laos relations, ensuring closer, more effective and substantive coordination across all areas of cooperation, in line with each country’s development requirements in the new phase.

In this context, priority will be given to enhancing the efficiency of cooperation in economy, trade and investment, accelerating infrastructure and transport connectivity, and strengthening collaboration in education and training, particularly in the development of strategic-level officials, as well as in science and technology, culture and tourism.

In addition, they emphasised the need to promote people-to-people exchanges and educate younger generations about the unique bilateral relationship, while preparing for major upcoming anniversaries, including the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties (2027) and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam – Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.

Both host and guest also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern, and agreed to enhance information sharing, joint assessments and coordination on global issues. They reaffirmed their commitment to close coordination at regional and international forums, while strengthening cooperation within Mekong sub-regional frameworks.

They expressed confidence that, with strong political will and public support, Vietnam–Laos relations would continue to grow in depth and effectiveness, contributing to peace, stability and development in the region.

The two senior Party officials witnessed the exchange of cooperation documents between relevant agencies of the two countries, aimed at further strengthening the Vietnam–Laos special relationship and strategic alignment.

The signed documents include a cooperation project on archives and library work for 2026–2030, and a memorandum of understanding between Dien Bien province (Vietnam) and Luang Namtha province (Laos) for the 2026–2029 period.
