Vietnam and Egypt look to strengthen parliamentary cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnamese President Luong Cuong and Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives Hanafy El Gebaly expressed their desire to enhance parliamentary cooperation between the two countries, during their meeting at the House's headquarters on August 6.

At the meeting, Speaker El Gebaly praised Vietnam’s dynamic development achievements and its growing international role and status. He affirmed that the visit marks an important milestone, contributing to deepening mutual understanding, political trust, and especially legislative cooperation between the two countries.

President Cuong emphasised that Vietnam always attaches great importance to developing traditional friendship with Egypt, the first African country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam in 1963.

The recent upgrade of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership, along with the signing of various cooperation agreements during the visit, lays a solid foundation to expand cooperation between the two legislative bodies, including delegation exchanges, experience sharing in law-making and legal oversight, and monitoring the implementation of bilateral agreements, he said.

Speaker El Gebaly expressed his desire to promote parliamentary cooperation between the two sides at both bilateral and multilateral levels. He also proposed enhancing visit exchanges to further promote cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, and investment. He expected that Egpt would welcome more Vietnamese people for tourism and study at Egyptian universities.

Both sides agreed to enhance exchanges between specialised committees, promote coordination at multilateral parliamentary forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and support the early establishment of the Vietnm – Egypt and Egypt-Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Groups, considering this an important mechanism to foster stronger ties between the two legislatures.

President Luong Cuong conveyed an invitation from Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to Speaker El Gebaly to visit Vietnam. The Speaker expressed his appreciation and said he looks forward to making the visit soon to further strengthen parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

The same day, President Luong Cuong met with President of the Egyptian Senate Abdel-Wahab Abdel-Razeq who emphasised the traditional friendship and strong ties between Vietnam and Egypt, and stressed the need to further enhance political trust, mutual understanding, and closer coordination between the two countries.

President Abdel-Razeq affirmed the Egyptian Senate’s desire to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam’s National Assembly and pledged to take all necessary measures to support the two States and Governments in effectively implementing existing commitments and cooperation plans, for the benefit of both peoples.

President Cuong highlighted the vast potential for further bilateral cooperation, particularly in economics, trade, and investment, which remains untapped compared to the strong political relationship and respective advantages of both countries. He called for close coordination between the two legislative bodies to support the effective implementation of bilateral cooperation mechanisms, finalise legal frameworks, promote business cooperation, and facilitate market access and people-to-people exchanges.

The two leaders agreed to enhance the role of parliamentary diplomacy by increasing exchanges of delegations between the two legislative bodies. They committed to promoting exchanges between young and female parliamentarians and closer coordination between the Arab Parliament and the Asian Parliamentary Assembly at multilateral parliamentary forums.

President Cuong conveyed an invitation from National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to the President of the Egyptian Senate to pay an official visit to Vietnam. President Abdel-Razeq expressed his appreciation and gladly accepted the invitation.

This was President Luong Cuong’s last activity during his State visit to Egypt. Shortly after shat the Vietnamese delegation led by President Luong Cuong departed Cairo, heading Angola for a State visit from August 6 to 9.
