Vietnam and DPRK signal new phase of bilateral cooperation
VOV.VN - Vietnam and the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK) are signaling a new phase in bilateral relations as both sides emphasise the need to strengthen political trust and expand practical cooperation following recent high-level exchanges.
The view was shared during a meeting in Pyongyang on May 15 between Vietnam’s Politburo member and Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK Cho Yong-won.
Cho welcomed Trung’s visit which he said comes at a time when the traditional friendship between the two countries is entering a new stage of development, building on agreements reached by their senior leaders during meetings in Pyongyang in October 2025.
He congratulated Vietnam on the successful organisation of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and on comrade To Lam’s election as General Secretary and President. He expressed confidence that Vietnam would continue achieving its long-term development goals under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Trung, who is also special envoy of General Secretary and President To Lam, conveyed a message from the top Vietnamese leader to DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, stating that the 14th National Party Congress had outlined long-term development orientations for Vietnam in a new development era.
He also reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to an independent, self-reliant foreign policy centred on diversification and multilateralisation of international relations.
Trung emphasised that Vietnam wishes to continue fostering traditional friendship with the DPRK in a more substantive and effective manner, aligned with the interests of both countries while contributing to regional peace and stability.
For its part, Cho affirmed Pyongyang’s consistent position in expanding friendly relations with Vietnam across political, economic and cultural fields, while expressing hopes for stronger political trust and sustainable bilateral cooperation.
Earlier on May 14, special envoy Le Hoai Trung met with Kim Song-nam, member of the Political Bureau of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), Secretary of the Party Central Committee, and head of the Foreign Affairs Department of the WPK Central Committee. He also held talks with Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui to discuss bilateral relations between Vietnam and the DPRK.
